I think in some places it's not a good idea to have $2000+ wheels on your car. I believe using replica wheels are not all that bad. For example:
- You wont have to worry about scratching a set of very expensive wheels.
- You wont have to worry to much about people seeing "RAYS" or "VOLKS" on your wheels and following you places.
- Daily use will not stress the wheels
- Cost factor (some people don't have the budget, want to spend money in other places, etc)
On the other hand, you still have a replica, a copy, not the real thing. For me, I've always wanted either Volk LE37s or SSR Comps. I settled for Rota Grids, one because they were actually a gift, but I could not find the wheels at the time I needed new tires.
I soon may be getting a set of SSRs for a couple reasons. I always wanted that wheel. Always wanted a geninue forged wheels, it's more respectable in the tuner community. <- That's not so much the reason but, more peace of mind if you track the car you won't worry about anything damaging the wheels.
Also, you gotta consider the brand name factor. A lot of people buy parts/items because of a brand name. Just like if you were getting a HDTV for your 360 or PS3. You'll want to get the best (Samsung, Sony, Phillips, Sharp, etc). Would you want to get a Duramax or Insignia? That's just like getting Volks, Work, Enkei, SSR, Mugens or Drag, Rota, Nippon.
When you get a more expensive product, most cases your pay for the name, but you're also paying for the quality. Anyone ever see that video about how Rays makes their wheels? Yeah, badass...don't see Rota posted a vid like that.
