I'm tired of my present setup not sounding exactly how I want it to sound, so I'm gonna take this opportunity of trying to rectify that issue to make a few other changes/improvements.
My rears sound OK, it's an MB Quart component set (with a 6.5 mid and a suspended tweeter), but my fronts sound harsh and I think it's because of the passive crossovers, so I'm gonna biamplify them (use electronic crossovers instead of the passive crossovers). My front speakers are an MB Quart PSD 213 reference series component set (5.25 mid). They sound fine at low/medium volume, but when you crank them up they get harsh. My volume goes from 1 to 25, and they only sound good up to about 16-18. Even if it's not the crossovers causing it, there's no downside to biamplifying, so I know I won't be wasting my time. I had a biamplified system in my 1990 Celica with an Alpine head, all MB Quart speakers and PPI amps and it was the best sounding system I've ever owned, (and that was with all entry level MB Quart speakers, although powered by all PPI Art Series amps ). Besides, like I said, I'll be making other improvments at the same time.
I'll be dropping some weight, because I've also decided to drop down to a 10 inch sub. I'll be going with a JL Audio 10W3v2 sub; it's alot lighter than a 12 inch Kicker L7 (cha-ching) and will require a smaller box (even less weight, cha-ching!) which means I'll also gain back some hatch space (chaaa-ching.). I was going to go with a 10W6v2, but they don't make them with dual 2 ohm voice coils, only dual 4 ohm, dammit. I was real disappointed to find that out tonight, those subs are the fucking shit and only cost about $75 more than a W3, well worth the extra money. I need a dual 2 ohm sub so I can wire it in series and give my amp a 4 ohm load, the amp can only work at 4 ohms when bridged (it's a PPI). 2 ohms will fry it.
So I wanted to ask you guys a question. Do you know any sites that sell JL subs? I've been scouring the internet and Ebay stores today for so long my eyes are irritated from being open for extended periods of time without blinking, hehe. I've found a few sites, but none have the sub for a reasonable price, compared to the prices I've seen other JL subs going for that is. I should be able to score this sub for less than $200 shipped, just haven't found the site that'll do it yet. Any suggestions?
