IIRC I saw something that they were trying to get into his email and post them up for public consumption?
And they already posted up all the owner's private info (phone number, address, etc etc)
Someone, from 4chan I believe, did a background check on the owner of Skunk2. I am sure that someone
would try to get into his email, if it hasn't already been done. A DDoS attack would cause pretty much no problem for them
because: 90% of the people won't know why they can't get to Skunk2 and will try again later, and the other 10% will visit Skunk2 during the day a couple of times to see if anything has happened (Hey! Free Marketing!)
Personally, I think the whole situation was stupid. Skunk2 shouldn't have taken the bait in the first place, I've now read every linked thread and post by either side, I believe, and there wasn't really a need for Skunk2 to get involved in the threads, or issue a 'bounty.'
(Edit: Which as of 1am PST had over 27,000 views on H-T. And all 700 posts are pretty resoundingly negative)
There were plenty of Skunk2 supporters present in the threads that looked at the information thrown out at them and came to reasonable conclusions without Skunk2 needing to try to browbeat everyone down. In fact, in most cases, the OP of the highjacked threads were the most articulate defenders. And several people chimed in to say that in cases where Skunk2 products were faulty/sub-par, the company stepped in to make it right. I don't really give a crap about country of manufacture, if any of us did we wouldn't be wearing Nikes, drinking espresso, or typing away on our hipster Apple laptops. And let's not even get into that whole harddrive debacle in Thailand, I mean Taiwan seems like a sunny dream compared to what Thailand is like... And if those guys were really touting "All American Manufacture" we wouldn't be having this conversation because they wouldn't own a computer, just saying.
The way this whole situation blew up made Skunk2 look like they were trying to tie random car enthusiasts to some railroad tracks. It didn't help that they lost their s*** because of a little trash talking on Honda-Tech... I mean, did they even know about Honda-Tech? That's pretty much the sewers of the internet right there...
I don't think any of us needed to be told about the history of the company, sounded pretty rudimentary as far as aftermarket car companies go. Start up making copies of existing products>Make some money>Begin R&D on New Products with that money>Success. And I was kind of irritated how they were throwing out names like Skunk2 is doing back alley deals, I mean seriously, if you do a record search on my name you'll see a few DBAs listed with the government. Most business owners have more than one business entity to handle some of the lateral, but necessary, functions for all sorts of reasons. Different structures are necessary for different tax breaks, they probably had to start a separate entity in order to do business in Taiwan, etc, etc. Don't be surprised if S2 has more than just YoYo and Group-A, there's probably a couple more floating around.
Am I disappointed in Skunk2's products, nah not really. I am pretty disappointed that they didn't just try to stay classy and aloof from this whole situation. I am torn between how douchey Signalpuke and BlazedD were and how much Skunk2 acted like a tool.
I am totally against all the internet-PI's that were tracking down S2's owner's info though. 4Chan usually just means to make things a joke, and I would be pretty disappointed/upset if it turned out that he got his house egged or his car broken into or something because of that information.
