Drop the speed limit to 55mph and help fight terrorism, lower gas prices, help earth!

LOLUMAD?
I drive for a living, in my GS-R. Ever since the beginning of the year I have been driving mostly 60-65mph instead of 70-75mph, due to the high rise in gas prices.

If I want to drive 55mph, then I follow behind a semi truck.
When I have my cruise control set to 60mph I am always in the slow lane.
In California the majority of freeways consist of at least 5 lanes, this includes the Carpool lane.

I run my car at least a few times a week. Whether its in the canyons, down a straight, or taking the freeway and mobbing out to a car meet doing 85-100mph with 10 others.
The only time I pretty much drive slow and try to be fuel efficient is when I am on the job. I have to pay for my own gas, not my boss.

"The UK's Department of Environment claims that every 5 mph you drive over 65 mph will provide a 7% decrease in fuel economy.

Incidentally if you believe these figures, at 130 mph on the autobahns of Germany, you'll be using 91% more fuel than at 65mph. At 150, you'll actually be getting negative miles per gallon, and you'll arrive at your destination younger than when you started!"

"Using higher gears won't give you lightning acceleration but will save fuel. Keeping your revs low (but not so low that your engine starts to struggle) is a good habit to get into when cruising."

Its impossible to reach a negative MPG number so im not sure how you got to that conclusion. The 5mph thing is not a linear model but the fact does apply that 5mph = 5-10% efficiency lost.

This theory can be very vehicle specific though and not accurate to many cars. Where a Suburban gets eaten alive by bad gearing and aerodynamics at speed, cars like my Lexus IS gets 29mpg at 65mpg but still maintains 27-28 at 80.

One could pick examples all day to manipulate the statistics to ones advantage. My results are not typical, but neither is 10% efficiency loss per 5mph. Maybe if you drive an Escalade, but not as typical to more prodominent models. You want to save gas, do something about the 10,000 tools I see everyday driving big V8 powered truck, SUV's and the like stomping around on the gas while riding by themselves 98% of the time. The ones who purchases a overly large vehicle for no legitimate reason.

As usual, there is a middle of the road that is not nearly as terrible as one side of the other would try and lead you to believe. Technology is a big help, for example: my 320hp family sedan gets around the same mileage as your 170hp Integra.

gotta love wishful thinking.. might as well go to every SUV you see and slash their tires so then they cant drive it! But then you'd just be seen as an asshole to society and you just dont win :(

Not to sound like a jerk, pick on you, or anything else but please don't follow semi's. Also when you say follow, I don't know how close you are talking so if I'm singling you out or falsly accusing you, please forgive.
I'm a truck driver and I was actually googling something else and came across this statement on a google search. Maybe I'm bored which is why I'm giving out this "safety" speech. Oh well, take it for what it's worth.

I know in rush hour traffic it's easy to just get behind somebody and just cruise....which is fine to me because we are all kinda crammed in there like sardines anyway. However, on the open road, please don't follow semi's. Few reasons.

1. After a long day driving, it's pretty annoying especially at night when the headlights bouce from one mirror to the next.
2. If something comes along where I need to move into the next lane quickly, the car behind will almost always shoot over in that lane and block it from me.....that normal happens at the worst possible timing. Even when the car shoots over to my cushion lane and is trying to allow me to come over....I often times can't judge my rear distance and or assume he's letting me over in a quick enough fashion.
3. If you rear end me, I still get either a "non preventable" or sometimes a "preventable" accident report on my record. The reason it is sometimes stated as "preventable" is because the trucking companies figure that I should know you are back there and either pull off to let you around or expand my following distance from the vehicle in front of me, so that I leave enough room to allow BOTH of us to slow down without you hitting me, in the event that something would cause me to need to stop or slow way down....like an animal, road contruction, or accident ahead.
4. There are a lot of good truckers out there, but there is also a lot of crappy one's out there.....you might be following the crappy one out there.
5. When a 120lb trailer tire blows, it could easily flip up into your windshield and cause you to get hurt.
6. My insurance rate for the year (excellent record) with out Hazmat liability is over $8000.00. With hazmat liability it's almost $12,000. There are attorneys all over the place looking for an easy buck from a truck driver which drives up my insurance rates.

The sweet spot for taking advantage of a semi truck is very close. If you look at a semi truck from a distance in the rain you can see where the sweet spot is, and where the very turbulant part is....which the turbulant part would probably reduce your fuel mileage.

Having said all that, there are a lot of crappy truck drivers out there that tailgate cars so I'm not trying to single out car drivers. In rush hour traffic you don't always have good options, but out in the middle of nowhere some truckers will tailgate the crap out of a car trying to bully him out of his/her way. I can't stand drivers that do that. We all share the road is the way I look at it.

Anyway, that my safety speech for the day. BTW, I don't own an Integra, but those are sweet cars.
Take care....from a bored truck driver waiting for my next load.

I know a lot of you also change your oil all the time and it's also a waste of money... People get paranoid about their engine oil calling it the "blood" of their engine, truth is that you don't need to change your oil as often as you may think. You can easily go over 5,000miles with today's oils. I know this is just one link but I have spent hours reading into this stuff and they all say about the same.
When to change your oil
Best thing to do if your really curious and your one of those people who change their oil every 3,000 miles, is to get your oil analyzed. Its around $25 and could end up saving you lots of money over time.

Ugh why did you dig this back up. Nothing's gonna change, I still drive 80 on the highway and change my oil every 3k miles. Get a bike hippie

No fucks given.
Jackal, you wouldn't be saying that last post had you seen my DD Saturn's oil when I changed it.... I change my oil every month and a half since the odometer's busted.

Speaking of the Saturn, I do 5-10mph over the speed limit everywhere, yet I put $25 in the tank and drive for a week and a half.

And why bump an old thread that just pissed a bunch of people off? As stated multiple times: Drivers are going to drive fast no matter what the posted limit is. That's why cops give out speeding tickets. If they want to save gas, they'll drive slow.

Do everyone on CI a favor and sell your Integra and f***ing walk to church (since that's apparently the only place you drive it) if you're so concerned with saving gas.

...Yes because i'm going to give up the only thing that gives me reason to wake up in the morning, Motorsports is more important to me than saving earth

Gas prices down in arkansas is at about $2.90 atm and freeway speed limits are about 60 everywhere and I drive about 90 until my radar scanner kicks in. Lol
