Drop the speed limit to 55mph and help fight terrorism, lower gas prices, help earth!

Heavy traffic goes slow because one person in the group goes 55 when everyone else wants to go 70. Then one tail light at the front slows everyone down 4x as much. Lol.

The limit is 65. How about you choose to do 55, but leave the rest of us alone to choose how fast we want to go, instead of imposing it upon us. Maybe we need to get somewhere quickly, maybe we don't mind paying for the extra gas we end up using to go faster. For the same reason some of us buy fuel efficient cars and some of us buy unefficient cars, people who buy a 17mpg Explorer know it gets 17mpg but choose to buy it anyway. It's their choice, if they want to spend double the money on gas that I spend on my Civic, that's their choice. I doubt most people buy 16mpg SUV's because they enjoy burning gas, maybe they need a big vehicle for a business or large family.
But it their choice, Land of the Free baby, embrace it!

I’m not denying anyone’s rights, a lot of people are pissed off about gas, myself included living in the city with the highest gas prices (good morning America a couple months back) in the nation. When oil goes up, everything else goes up as well. Milk has gone up another $0.30/gallon where I live and many companies are choosing to downsize their products and sell them at the same price all due to the fact that oil has gone up and the demand for the same resources has stayed the same. If we could get out of the "Me" way of looking at our lives, then we can make some big changes. When oil is up, we all pay and not just at the gas pump. And no, it’s not the guy going 55mph that causes traffic, it’s the guy going 75+ weaving in between cars and scaring moms on the freeway in to hitting their brakes...

Maybe you should buy a scooter or get a better job then. You have preached your case. Should something be done, YES, is it drive 55mph? HELL NO! The difference in mpg's going 55mpg vs 65mpg is less than the difference of people having their cars tires under deflated, why dont you put your effort there instead. As for prices on other good climbing, its a global market and your flat out ignoring the multitude of other factors going on right now. Just look at our current rising inflation, from January to March of this year alone the rate rose 60%! There are alot of factors that go into the cost of your daily goods, including the fact your in a city center as you mentioned.

Have fun going 55mph

^^ very true.

One of the places I work, their product has almost tripled in cost over the last 6 months, and there's no REAL reason outside of the price of milk. maybe that's the cause... the cows are stubborn, thus demanding more money and better living standards... the raise for the cows = a raise in milk prices, but the store owner cant survive on the newly raised milk prices, so he needs to raise his prices too to make enough money to get to the store to get his milk. Milk goes up causing cheese to go up, now restaurants need to jack their prices because they can't afford the newly priced cheese, or the gas to get to the store because the milk prices rose.

I blame the cows.

I forgot to mention this earlier as well, but it's true, 55 and 65 wont make a huge difference in gas consumption as long as its a constant speed and not flooring it to 65 and dropping down to 55 back and forth.
Some people do drive gas guzzlers unnecessarily, go after them. Some do need to drive those cars though, for the stated, family, or business matters, etc.

Its a small price to pay.

ps I doubt its someone at the front of the line going 75 weaving in and out of traffic. It might be you though, since you mention it.. I'm always stuck at the back of traffic, so how would I know whats going on up front

Driving 65 instead of 55 isnt much of a difference to one person doing it, about 10% more/less in mpg, but if million of people are, then we are talking about huge changes. Thats the whole point of this thread and the reason I did it.

So I take it you don't ever race your car? Track days must make your stomach crawl to think of the amount of tire smoke and fuel being used to go a quarter mile

EDIT: Oh yeah, and we drop our pressure to 20 psi :scurred:

OP your an delusional if you think lowering speed limits will cause people to go slower. Also going slow cause back ups in traffic which causes people to sit(with cars running) waiting for traffic to move. Where i live our highways are 45mph to 55mph. Its so great...NOT! We have constant traffic because of people going to slow for the number of people on the road. If people go faster then traffic moves faster and thus eliminating traffic. You wanna drive 55 on the high way thats fine. ill be the guy riding ur ass and honking the horn and flipping you off when i go by.

people gotta work and dont hav time to just cruise. and by the huge amount of support ur getting from ci i hav a feeling this post is real effective. How bout you invest your time into lobbying for a cleaner fuel to be made more accesible. instead of hindering the rest of the economy with speed limits. everybody wins

nothing from nowhere
i remember when it costed $12 to fill my car, now its almost $50. they actually tried lowering the speed limit in the 70s during the oil crisis and i remember reading it save how manty billions of gas a year. americans are greedy people and as seen here, dont have a problem paying $4 to $5 a gallon. the only way is if the ration the fuel like was done before. we knew about this for 4 years now and i still cant believe all the suv"s and big domestic gas guzzlers driving around, our whole life revolves around fuel which is sad. and bty i drive to church too.
