cant i just level 10 my tranny and that should hold up right?
There are 2 seperate issues here. The first is getting the motor to hit 300 whp-or about 340 crank. Thats over 200 more than stock. A jrsc will get you 160whp with intake a exhaust. With upgraded pullies, injectors, tb, cams, cam gears, valves, retainers, upgrade sc pulley, you might be able to hit 200 whp. Tuning is going to be an issue. Unless you are going to look at a standalone, your'e limited to having the shop tune your car with an fpr, cam gears, and possibly an safc. Now if you were to use a b20 block with some forged psitons, you could throw more boost at it, however your're still going to be running into the tuning problem. Probably the best solution would be to do an obd1 conversion and have a shop burn you a custom chip-after extenisve tuning. I think 225-50whp would be reasonable with this setup. You could then spray a 50-75 wet shot which would push you over the 300 whp mark. Everyone talks about 300whp, but its not that easy when an ls motor puts out between 100-110 whp stock. You bascially want to triple the output.
Second issue is the tranny. It's not worth arguing, the automatic is a weaker transmission. From everything I've heard, and what I've experienced so far, the ls/gs automatic tranny will handle up to 250 crank or around 200 whp before you run into problems. The torque converter sucks ass-which is why the car seems to take forever to shift. Level ten is a good starting point, however you have to consider everything you will need. First, a torque converter upgrade will run you about $600 (taking your tc and rebuilding it). For your setup your looking at a stage 3 upgrade on both the tc and tranny. The tranny rebuld will cost another $2500-3000, not including shipping. This will give you a bulletproof tranny with custom gear ratios. Since the auto is a 4-speed-it naturally has taller gears. You have to decide whether this is going to be a dragstrip car, which will sacrifice top end speed. You also have to look at installing a tranny cooler, to prolong the life. Another upgrade need is going to be new axles-another $600, and and lsd-$1300 for a good one.
I'm looking at possibly adding a jrsc to my current setup for 240-250whp (hopefully), however, I've been doing lots of research, and I also have another tranny in the garage.
