Premium or not?

"If you are unable to find premium unleaded, you may substitute an unleaded regular gasoline."

But you are able to find it. Don't be a cheap bastard. A true car enthusiast will give their vehicle the best possible parts, fuel and care that they can. If you seriously can't afford premium then you should find a new hobby. Modifying cars is expensive.

The gauge cluster on my dash says to use "premium gasoline only", so you know what I do? I only put premium gasoline in my car..

I like to read into things a little more than just what my Gauge Cluster says. I have a degree in Automotive Technology so it’s not as if I have no Idea what it is that I am talking about. But like I said, do what you feel comfortable with. Don’t go around disrespecting me and others who choose to do this. Modifying cars does not have to be expensive and trying to save money should not equate to not being a car "enthusiast", that’s just stupid... I do appreciate your concern! =^D

The knock sensor is used to prevent detonation in slight chances you might now be using the highest grade. Pretty much anything past vtec should be with premium gas. It burns better. Especially because the vtec engines rev so high. As a technician, you should know this bro instead of saying its "ok" most of the time when clearly it is'nt. Sure the manual says you can get by if there isn't resources, but there is and he should be running premium. It can be that he might acually get worse fuel economy with regular. You should know that too

lol, did you pay any attention in your automotive class then? because they would have explained to you why premium gas is required in cars that use it... premium gas is $.25 more then regular unleaded. at most you'll spend 3 dollars (if your car is completely dry in the gas tank) to have the gas your car is *suggested* and tuned from the factory to run on.

if you really cant afford the 3 dollars,
A.) quit running your tank dry, and
B.) ... idk, I got nothing.

It's a few dollars...if you're that in need of money that you absolutely must save less than $5 on something serious like a car then have at it, bro. It's your car.

I spend about $33 dollars to fill up in CA. Premium gas from Chevron is 3.50... I used to spend like 30 on my DA. My GSR gets better fuel economy.

I have a fuel purchase record so its easy for me to follow changes in 87 and 91 octane fill-ups. Where I learned that premium is not necessary was in my Fuel Systems class. Like I said, not all cars will respond well to lower octane fuels. Some say that you absolutely must always put in premium, there is no other choice. Ours gives us the option and I take advantage of it. Something else to point out is that the Manual says that performance is lowered but it does not warn of changing driving habits or risk engine damage. And im driving really conservatively when im on 87 because the engine does not like it as much although the manual does not state to change driving habits. Fill-up after Fill-up, those few dollars add up to other things I can buy for my car so no, its not foolish for me to do so. Read this and prepare for enlightenment!

I'm from New Zealand and here the fuel options are either 91(regular) 95 or 98 (premium depending on where you fill up)
Which one should I use?

You my friend have the luxury of running whatever you would like, I personally would run the 98 if given the option, but that's just me, I don't mind spending the extra $2 per fill up, and I have an ls motor that only sees premium, I'll push that bitch to a gas station that has premium if it runs out before I can find one

The Jackyl you should punch your teacher in the face. I had a buddy who argued the same point as you, he put 87-89 in his GSR, guess what happened. You could hear the damn thing pinging until he put 93 in it. Octane does matter, thats like saying "oh you can run 89 in your boosted car even though its tuned on 93.

89: $305
93: $3.15

if $1.20 is going to be your limiting factor then like others have said, you shoud prob just stop driving your car.

Why you shouldn’t skimp and buy a lower octane than required. Your engine operates most efficiently when that air/fuel mix explodes when it’s supposed to explode. The whole timing of the engine is fouled up when it explodes early and that’s what happens if you put regular gas into an engine designed with premium in mind. When 87 gas is compressed to 91 levels, it’ll explode prematurely and foul up the timing of the engine (this is known as “knocking”).

Oh God, let this thread rest in peace, run premium or use the money you're saving by running regular to save for a new motor, end of story, I'm not a genius, but I know enough to say that, next subject!

You guys must not know how to read. I included an article where you could clearly READ that it is not necessary to put 91 in your car if you have the option. Read the article. Mine never pings and im guessing his did because maybe his Knock Sensor was not working properly or it had some other problem. Read the article. 87 octane where I live is anywhere from $3.30 to $3.70. 91 octane is anywhere from $3.50 to $3.90. When prices come down, then ill consider using 91 again. Read the Article. And stop trying to make me look like an idiot when all the professionals and many others who have used regular gasoline instead of premium are on my side. Read The Article and maybe learn something instead of regurgitating what your friends say. Like I’ve said many times before, do what feels comfortable and put in your Premium if you want to, but don’t tell others that they are morons if they Choose the Available Option as dictated by Engineers in Japan to use a lower grade gasoline. Read the Article!
