What the dealership does is take the value of your car, and then subtract what it will cost to advertise it, to go over it mechanically and repair/replace anything that needs to be fixed, and to recondition it. Yeah, they hose you on trade-ins. When I bought my Teg, I asked what they would give me for my trade in, which was KBB'd at 6 grand. They offered me $2,500! I said no way, put it on autotrader.com (back when autotrader was still free) and sold it for 5 grand. I think they lowballed me a bit because I was buying the Integra for wholesale cost. They had just gotten it in as a trade in and hadn't touched it yet. it was just sitting way back in the lot, still filthy as hell from the previous owner. It booked for $12,800, I got it for $8,800! This was in July of 2000. They made a deal with me that they'll sell it to me "as is", without going over it mechanically, for $8,800, I was like hell yeah! I didn't even think they'd clean it, but when I got there to pick it up a few days later it was SPARKLING inside and out!
and yeah, check out
www.kbb.com and check out what our GSR is worth, it not a whole lot. I run my car on there, they tell me my car is worth like 5 grand (137K, sweet condition) and I just laugh. It's worth a hell of a lot more than that to me. You'll always be better off selling it privately, if you financially able to buy a new car while still holding on to the old one, and then are ABLE to sell it.
