GSR Tranny vs Type R Tranny

According to the technical guide, the Type R has a different bearing design, different clutch and a lightweight flywheel. It has a helical gear type LSD. I have also noticed that the Type R trans has a lighter starter bolted to it, a lighter intermediate shaft, and a different engine stiffener.

The Type R trans is not the same as a B16 with an LSD option, any more than a Type R is a GSR with a Type R motor suspension and interior in it.

A lot of this information is false. Gearing is only part of the story. The B16 has the same gearing as the Type R, but there are differences besides the addition of LSD. The Type R LSD is different than the optional JDM B16 and Sir-G (=GSR) LSDs, and in fact the Type R LSD is the only OEM LSD worth having.

This information is readily available. Posting topics and searching for old topics on forums IS NOT RESEARCH. If it is, then try writing an article citing forums and getting it published. Search for a file called "type_r_technical_guide.pdf". Also try the articles at www.theoldone.com

There is no reason to ever say that the GSR or LS trans is better for turbo. This is a misinterpretation. Longer gears allow for a higher top speed, but at the expense of acceleration. So someone once said that the more power you have, the less you need a short geared tranny. That information got twisted and repeated with no comprehension and now it is taken as fact. It's completely false. Unless you're bouncing off the rev limiter if 5th gear setting a land speed record, the shorter trans is quicker.

The JDM 98+ had a shorter final gear.

I have a Type R trans in a stock GSR coupe. I'm just waiting a few more weeks until I pop the trans back out and ship it to MFactory to have it rebuilt with their synchros and sleeves, and have them fit their 3rd gear and an LS 5th gear.
I agree. And thanks for the information. Some people would try to convice me that a GSR tranny would be the way to go since they knew of the longer gears, but like I said I've grown acusom to the B16 and it's close gears which is identical to the Type R. Plus, the LSD is ideal for stop n go racing.
And good luck on sending your tranny to the MFactory and it coming back anytime soon. From what I heard on the street when I was looking for a Tranny was that things have been put on delay as far as parts from Japan. Something like 2 months. But hopefully that's not the case with you.

New news...I just bought the Type R Tranny from my friend in San Jose. I still can't believe I got a 2000 Type R tranny with only 40k miles on it from Japan for only a grand. Do you guys realize how much they go for? I heard they're around 3k. Anywayz, I'll update once it's installed.

I have a mint ITR tranny that I'm selling for $900 and btw I make 522whp. And to give you an idea when I switched from a LS trans to a ITR trans I went 1 second faster in the 1/4
