With that low of compression and it blowing smoke and back firing I'd just rebuild the whole motor such as buying the complete head gasket rebuild kit that comes with every gasket and gromet and seal you'll need for around $300 to $450. You can do the piston rings with the block still in the car. The toughest job in my opinion is changing the valve stem seals since they are so deep into the head and the retainers are so small and hard to hold on to.
