There are 24 particular locations with surface rust. I only need sanding supplies and a clearcoat. Other than that, I have an approximate colour aerosol paint and etching primer.

The body section of the hatch lid is horrible. HORRIBLE. This is paint week.
I spent several hours removing paint from the hatch, finding a lot more rust than the giant spot near the corner. Clearly, it was bondo time.

I just resprayed it today (canned aerosol Rio Red approximation). That's not a scratch near the top of the image; it's the taped off window.

All that's left for the hatch is a clearcoat. Would a 2000 grit wet sandpaper be appropriate to treat the paint before applying clearcoat?

I've taken the step to remove the badges. As a noob to bondo, I say I've done relatively well. All the is left is a small spot at the front of the hood, two primered spots on the driver side door and rear fender and along the door jambs. I would have proceeded, but I ran out of paint. I will continue next week, probably.

Your plates confuse me! First it's NH, then its VT (802 yeah!) and then Maine!?

If you're from VT, I'd love to meet up. Anyways good work on the body!

ha. thanks. Actually those pics with the VT plates are from the PO. I never bothered the remove them until a few weeks before the first inspection. Maine plates? Oh. The Civic isn't mine. The Civic belongs to my friend. I drove it once and that encouraged me to buy the DA in the first place. Yay, Honda!

Quick and unnecessary note. I saw a cloud of blue smoke yesterday while backing out of a steep driveway. Of course it has me worried. I really need to get at this valve stem seal job. Doing so will allow me to keep more of the oil, which is already medicated with a high-weight crankcase additive, in the engine. I could also run a valve lash adjustment, which is mandatory after a stem seal replacement process. It will also give me the opportunity to replace my valve cover with my shiny red enamel cover. I heard of a brilliant trick in which you feed nylon string into the combustion chambers through the spark plug ports and turn them to TDC to prevent the valves from falling in. it would definitely take the risk out of process. My stepdad is skeptic toward my willingness to attempt the process myself.

On lesser notes, in a week or two I will be getting another can of approximated OEM spray paint so I can patch up. It will be a long time before I can afford a full paint job. Maybe when I come to Cali I'll try to arrange something.

man tht looks good bro, u do body work for a living?
thanks man. but no. This is my first actual encounter with bodywork. To be honest, the bondo work on the hatch deck is kind of dodgy. Where the giant rust spot used to be does have a flaw because I didn't know how to apply the bondo. I'm somehow very smooth with canned paint. Around the hatch lock is a little bit of texture below the repainted surface where I just ground the rust out with a polishing wheel but never bothered to fill it in with bondo because I was getting exhausted from breathing in the paint vapours. The point is that the paint there is considerably better than it was before and I'm happy with the de-badged appearance. If I'm getting a full paint job, it will be done by a professional. But that's a while away.

I actually live quite close to Essex County.

Okay. From all the bodywork aside, I want to redo the roof also, not because there are rust problems, but the paint is really paling all over the place. In some areas it's turned pink and in other areas the shine is going away. What would you all think if I did a blacked out roof? Would it look cheesy or ricer?

In my opinion the black really only works for hoods, bumper bras and MAYBE the hatch. Maybe pick up some parts from a junkyard and repaint 'em?

Also, Essex County? Hmm how close is that to Chittenden County haha

I dunno. Not very many options around here in terms of junkyards. :(

Essex is in the northeast corner, right next to Caledonia.

USELESS ACCENT NUMBER ONE! SOON TO COMPLEMENT THE VALVE COVER!
one thing that really bothers me about the valve cover is the gasket. Anyway I can prevent it from stretching after being heated?
