Reverse gear grind

When I start my car in the morning and put it in reverse it grinds really bad. But when I have driven the car and its warm it does not happen and everything works perfectly. I have currently remedied this problem by starting the car the in reverse gear that way it can't grind. I tried adjusting the clutch cable and it doesn't make a difference. So, any suggestions?

Thanks!

Nope. I was going to ask that. I'm guessing it has a fill and drain plug? What oil/fluid does it take?

Thanks!

And I'm sure I sound like a complete newb. But Honda's/Acura's are new to me. And I swore I'd never ever own one...and well now I do.

Schweet.
my car grinds in reverse also except mine's an automatic. :( changing the tranny fluid didn't seem to help.

I think a lot of G2s do that, sometimes putting it in a different gear first helps.

10w-30 motor oil is what my FSM told me to use.
That's what i'm rocking in my rebuilt 5 speed, and it's been kind to me so far.

I think there's also a manual transmission fluid made my Honda? Who knows.

Not sure why it would be grinding in reverse, bad synchro maybe? Does reverse even have a synchro?
Goddamn I shouldn't be rebuilding transmissions. Lol.

I heard switching to GM snycromesh works great. They say not to expect immediate results, but after some driving it improves.

I'm running Synchromesh in my trans now, it's worked really well. When I first got the car it wanted to grind a bit in 3rd if you shifted hard. After draining it, filling with Synchromesh, then changing it about 5k later with more Synchromesh, no more 3rd gear grind when I shift high in the rpm band.

Switching to a different gear first does not help at all. Its actually hard to get into first too. Supposedly 1st and Reverse do not have syncro's. No idea why...but I read that somewhere. I'm actually in the process of rebuilding a 5spd for a Dodge truck. I'll change the oil first then we'll see what happens.

I have no grinding in any gears except at higher rpm in reverse. I can slam it into any gear as hard and fast as I want and it won't grind.

Try putting it in fourth, I have the same issue. I hit fourth then reverse, don't take your foot off the clutch til you are trying to move. And if anyone is having an issue with first, hit second, then try first.

I changed the transmission fluid and it still seems the same. It grinds when it revs high and when the transmission is cold. Not sure if those two are related or not. Any more suggestions or do I have to tear it all apart?

Always run Honda MTF, it takes about 2.75 quarts. For those running synchromesh, yes it can be good, but i have been told by many honda techs to never run anything but Honda MTF. Due to how the transmissions are designed

this is what ive been told by all the honda techs at the dealership,

Honda transmissions are built like older transmissions, and being like that they shouldnt run these synthetic or newer transmission fluid because of that. they are actually too thick and can cause your gears to get hot prematurely and cause a gear failure sooner.

^^ cheapest ive found it, they want 7.59 a qt at most dealerships
