Mirrorimg's build thread

Look at you OGs spamming up my thread... :D

I have an update. Well sort of two small ones.

I took off the twin loop because it was getting quite loud. I believe that my burning of oil plus the 180* turns the piping makes throughout the muffler allows the burn oil to build up and lessen the dampening ability of the muffler. It sure is heavier than it was when I got it, so its definitely a sign. I tried to burn some out with some fire in it (compressed air, brake cleaner, and some cardboard/paper towels makes a nice fire in the muffler). It helped a little, but it really needs to get cleaned out (repacked...)

When I get around to it, I will put it back on after my exhaust changes to see if its still loud. If it is, then its pretty much worthless to me in its current state, and I will cut it open to try to replace the packing inside. Motorcycle mufflers are sometimes able to be disassembled to be repacked with new filler material. Im hoping to be able to use that if necessary. Definitely going to be a big project haha.

So the real updated. I put my Tanabe SMH back on, I used some touch up paint and sanded+buffed the spots out (will need more attention) but no pictures of that, and I got some new parts in.

I havent gotten my tax return back, but with it I will get a welder (hobart handler 140, most likely) and start practicing on scrap I hope to pick up from a local shop. I will do the resonator first, and then do the cat+flex pipe but not install that. I will need to rebuild my block before a new cat goes in as I dont want to clog it all up with the oil I am burning.

The items in the picture above are a 4" flex pipe, a 12" Vibrant Resonator, and a Carsound Cat (magnaflow, 54306). All of these pieces have a 2.5" diameter.

AH! Thats one of the things I touched up. I drove around for a week or two with a partially sanded bumper. Since the damage was rather light on most of it, it didnt get through the paint in many areas. I put a bit of touch-up clear lacquer and sanded it down with 1500/2000G paper. Used a small wooden block with some foam on the end of it to give myself even pressure after learning what NOT to do on my hood :???:

I will have to take pictures this weekend, though I dont have a good front-on before picture.

Edit: Lip is still off though.

Block needs to be rebuilded again?
Lets just say I am learning from mistakes...

When I put the new head on, the walls were really scarred up. Potentially form myself not working in a clean environment or getting some dirt in the combustion chamber. Whatever it is, oil is filling in the cracks and slipping by the oil control rings.

I have a spare block on my garage. I am going to bore it out to 82mm and swap over all of my current internals. That will keep cost down, but I will still need to get some bearings and plastigauge it this time. Thats something I overlooked before.

Ah I see, well at least you learned something right? I'm also learning from everyone's experiences as well. Good luck with the build bro.

Of course I did. Im sure I have done 75% of my car twice, but your really do learn from mistakes. If I had been through this with another car, Im sure I would have a head start, but you really have to learn somewhere.

I have been contemplating it for the past few months, but money has been the factor, along with down-time. I have a spare block in the garage (but the crank has a spun rod bearing). When time comes I will take the block to the shop and get bearings to fit my current crank. We will see when that comes though. Dont you worry, pictures will be inevitable. Car doesnt smoke very bad, but it definitely is in its future.

Technically, my bottom end it semi-built. I have ITR style RS Machine pistons in 82mm and ARP rod bolts. I certainly wont be upgrading the rods nor doing anything special with the crank. The only real upgrade I could go with is doing JDM ITR or PR3 (b16 high dome) pistons, both of which require me to outlay some more money. I really want to go with a B20 block to match the head, with high dome 84mm pistons, but that is not in my budget with trying to buy a house in the next couple of months.

what type of rings are you thinking of going with this time around??
I used Hastings piston rings before. I dont blame them for the cylinders. Im sure it was installer-error, which was myself, although I did not test them and if too large, grind them down. They came with the pistons I ordered (RS Machine). I will either go with Hastings or OEM.

Doing anything this weekend? I have weekend duty at the hospital so I'll be around.
I am working on Saturday at Little Creek amphib base from 1000 to 1600. Other than that, I am trying to go on a date with a woman I work with. That probably wont happen, so I will most likely be available after that or sometime on Sunday. LMK Stephen.

Where exactly are you stationed at and how long are you here? Send me a PM with your phone number. I wouldn't mind hanging out for a day, especially when the weather is nice.

I'm at the Naval hospital in Portsmouth. I'll be here for another year and a half. PM sent.

Sorry stephen, wasnt up to doing anything today so I didnt bother calling. I slept most of the day to not feel the ill effects of my drinking last night haha.

I did take my first picture with my new phone, the HTC Inspire. Its sporting an 8mp camera, so it will most likely replace my 8mp point and shoot for most of my pictures. When I do have something big to work on though, I will still pull out the point and shoot as I can get better quality from it.

Here is my bumper after some touch up. I need to give the car a wash and re-buff the other areas I touched up. You can still see the scratches from the sand paper in certain light conditions.
