Driver's Side Seat Belt Problem

Hello All, hope you motorheads can help with this problem.

First of all, I love my 21 year old red rocket! You won't hear any bashing from me. If a car is so new you can't hear the engine, I don't want one. I luv 34 mpg with the engine winding up near 4,000 rpms in 5th. I got it for free with a fried clutch. It has 120K and was a lawn ornament for a year at my friend's house. Retired my 86 Toyota PU with 400K miles and been drivin' the Acura ever since. I've been doing my own repairs since I was a kid.

So, it has those automatic seat belts. The passenger side works fine, however, the driver's side has issues. When I get in and turn on the ignition, everything is normal and belt is retracted. When the door closes, the belt slides to the rear and drops into the locked position. Whenever I open the door, the belt will not retract. The only time it'll retract is door closed, turn off ignition and remove key--then it retracts. If I turn off engine and open door w/o removing key--will not retract. Then remove key--no retract. Shutting door, turn on ignition, turn off ignition and remove key--belt retracts. It seems like my Haynes manual covers everything but the seatbelt system. If anyone has a wiring diagram, that would be great. Thanks

I believe it is supposed to do that?! It's a safety feature... Like if you have an accident, the car flips over, and it kills the engine, the same thing would happen... It is basically an automatic thing, that happens when you do this process... It is just for your own safety...

yeah, thats just the way it's set up in the 90-93 models. my 90 GS does the same thing. key has to be taken out before the driver side seat belt will retract.

The seatbelt is supposed to retract when the door is opened, regardless of key situation. Take it to the dealership, should be covered

Let me clear things up... the belt on retracs when the key is out of the ignition and the car is off.

you guys made it a all confusing lol

in order to get out of your car, you must turn off the car and pull the key unless you want to manually remove the belt.

no problems at all :)

My DA did this from the day I bought it. Mine was a 90 and made in may89.

Maybe it was a revision that they made later on.

If they let you do this, you would forget your key in the car in the on position. Possibly locking your door on the way out

I have had 2 G2 Integras and they both retract the seatbelt whenever the door is opened. It sounds like yours has the same issue that the OP's does.

Got some answers

Thanks for your replies. Last night I found a decent wiring diagram and apparently there's more than one sensor for the mechanism. There's a sensor for the door, lap belt, retracted belt, ignition switch, and belt engaged, plus a control unit for each seat. I'm guessing my problem lies in the door sensor (broken wire or bad sensor), but locating it is difficult. I haven't disassembled the door yet, but it's coming. The obvious door switch works fine, but doesn't affect the seat belt. When I unbuckle and retract the lap belt with ignition on, a beeper goes off.

I do know that the seat belt is supposed to retract when the door is opened--engine running or not. It won't re-engage unless the ignition is on. That's how the passenger side works and my work vehicle is a 1991 Accord with the same system and it works correctly.

The other thing I did today was call my "local" Acura dealer, which 220 miles away in Spokane. They stated it is fully warranted parts and labor. I have to bring to the dealership though and that will require two separate trips: one to diagnose and one to repair. That part is not convenient at all.

I'll be happy to post a link to the wiring diagram. Any other insight is most appreciated.
