unusual misfiring problem

hey everybody,

i have a 2000 gsr. motor is bone stock. but for MONTHS now its had a really weird problem. it will throw a cel for misfire on cylinders 1-4, and a random multiple misfire. the thing is, its intermittent. the cel will come on for a week or two, then go away. then come back... and its been this way for months. theres time where the exhaust CLEARLY sounds like its misfiring (put put put) and times where the motor would just purr. i have no idea whats up... and honestly, i'm really confused.

just so everybody knows, EVERYTHING ignition related is brand new.

OEM gsr distributor (new, oem)
dizzy cap/rotor NEW OEM as well
ngk wires
ngk plugs (gapped correctly)


any suggestions? its really aggravating...

man... You did a hell of a job shooting down all the basic idea's people will have off the bat too. haha

under what conditions does it usually misfire? like... up a steep hill, certain RPM range, or after it rains?
anything like that?

check for any air leaks would be my next thing on the list, or one time i was freaking out cause my motor keep misfiring and we were overlooking everything and found a loose wire on the dizzy lol, just double check everything and make sure its tight

Pull your plugs and take a look at them..its possible that your air/fuel ratio is all messed up, that could cause a misfire.
Doubt its the dizzy/rotor, that would most likely affect all cylinders.

Is the engine hard to start? Or stall/almost stall at idle?

Why wouldn't the dizzy affect the misfire? that's the key piece to the fire itself. lol

I didn't say it wouldn't affect the missing, I said it would most likely affect ALL cylinders. Say for example if the coil was weak or there was excessive rotor gap.

what the hell is rotor gas?


OP. Look into your TPS. My GSR does this every now and again. With the car running at operating tempature, pop the hood and wiggle the tps plug around and see if the misfire returns.

check the valve adjustment, especially the exhaust valves. bad gas or faulty injector(s) can also cause muti and random misfire codes

I just read the first part of what he posted.

There's a lot of things that can cause a misfire... Cam sensor, crank sensor, MAP sensor, TPS sensor, faulty wires, faulty grounds, leaky injectors, stuck injectors, a plugged cat... the list goes on.....

you guys rock. thanks for all the input and help, i REALLY REALLY appreciate it!

so today i'll take everybody's words... i'll check for faulty wiring or anything around the dizzy... i'll just double check and make sure all the plugs are good. about the tps thing, i didnt know that that could cause similar problems. thats really weird... but you may be right. so i'll check on that as well. i'll just do what everybody said in this thread.... haha. what have i got to lose? lol. thanks again everybody!

oh yeah, to the person who brought up valve adjustment, they are in spec. they were done about 2 months ago. i have a feeling it may be injectors...... given the previous owner was the only owner before me, do you think that her buying cheap gas for 7 years could have 'dirtied up' or somehow clogged the fuel system with debris??? i dont know.... all i did for the fuel system was buy a new filter when i first got the car.

you can go to any auto parts store and put some lucas injector cleaner in gas and see if that helps and if not, it cant hurt, its only like 5 bucks
