"Best" is fairly subjective and opinionated term. Most people use either Mobil 1 Full Synthetic or Royal Purple. I personally prefer Mobil 1

RedLine, Mobil 1, ENEOS, AMSoil and Royal Purple are all great synthetics.... I use Royal Purple in everything and love it.

I use valvoline and mobil 1. You can switch to synthetic anytime safely.

Ok I just read that first page on clubcivic and slammed_civic; how can you say that the bearing wear and all was from the synthetic? I don't see any valid proof for that. I've changed multiple cars over to synthetic with lots of miles on them and they all ran fine for a long time.

The only thing that is recommended when switching is to do a few low mile changes to help flush out any deposits.

I just switched on the Integra @ 166k miles. I'm pretty sure it doesn't matter the mileage. Just get some great synthetic, drain previous conventional POS, flush out the POS oil with motor flush (or a little extra new oil) and pour in the new synthetic goodness, and finally: ENJOY! :D

You answered your own question here. Nothing was flushed out. The Royal Purple garbage actually broke down all of the crap in the old oil. Crap being wax deposits. It clogged up the pickup tube and starved the engine for oil. Im just glad the customer caught it in time instead of ruining more than just the rocker pads and bearings.

Even flushing the engine out will still bring unwanted sludge into the oil pickup. In order to do an engine flush you need to bring the engine to full operating tempature by running it.

With my engines Ide much rather be safe than sorry. I will not do a switch to synthetic oil with more than 75k on an engine. Thats just my preferance and my preferance has been brought on by experience.

Hope this shed some light on questions you may have had.

Engines shouldn't have that much sludge, if any, at only 75k miles to become a problem unless they are mistreated and malnourished from the get go. Buying a poorly maintained car is more reason for whining then changing to synthetic and using it as a scapegoat

It doesn't shed any light. You didn't even answer the question. You don't know what caused that buildup, you don't know what caused the bearing wear, or rocker wear, he might have run it low on oil in the past, maybe he put some oil treatment in it, you can't say that it was caused by the synthetic unless you had it inspected right before the switch and right after. The engine shouldn't even have had any build-up if it was taken care of properly. Switching to synthetic will do more good then harm, especially in a higher output motor.

The customers engine had roughly 120k on it. He ran conventional oil in it forever. Switched to Royal Purple 5w30 and this happened. Noone is whining. Im just trying to shed some light on the possibilities.

The 75k figure just comes from a personal preferance.

I have changed all cars purchased to full synthetic. I just change oil more often at first to clean out motor and then do regular oil changes. two integras, two camaros, and my wifes civic i havent had any problems at all.
