tranny problem... 92 5-speed RS HELP!!

hi everbody,
i just bought a 92 5-speed integra, and i was very happy until the driver side lower ball joint gave out. after replacing both sides i was back on the road.

except, the transmission is very hard to shift. i've had a couple of times when it took me five minutes to get it in first gear after stopping and puiting it in neutral. i was told it could be the throw out bearing, and i know the clutch disc is worn way out because it slips like crazy - especially in 4th and 5th gear when i floor it.

does anyone have any idea what the problem is? and is it worth taking the tranny apart or just replacing the clutch disc, and throw out bearing and hoping for the best?

also which transmission models would fit my engine? i think it's a B18A1 but not sure....how can i tell?

also, i've read all kinds of stuff about brake fluid in the clutch etc... but that's in hydaulic clutches only right? doesn't apply to my car?

thanks for any help at all...

lol my ball joint just caused me a ton of headache too!
My transmission was really hard to get into gear as well. It turned out that my oil seals (where the passenger shaft, and the intermediate shaft connect to the transmission) were bad. So my transmission ran dry for a long time. This ended up destroying my synchros. Check your transmission fluid.
It also could be your throw out bearing, if this is the case and your clutch slips as well. Replace the clutch. A clutch kit should come with what you need to fix your problem... This is a good idea even if its not the cause
Your motor (unless you have a GSR) should be a B18B. If you open your hood, it will be right next to the transmission on the front of the block. You can see that is says "B18C" in this pic...

Most B series transmissions are interchangeable. There are a few that have a different amount of splines on the shaft... so find out which one works.

In the end I recommend
1 check your transmission fluid, and the shifter bushings, and anything else that may be obviously restricting it from going into gear.
2 get a new clutch kit.
3 if those don't fix it, then find out if it is just the synchros and have them replaced, or buy a new transmission.

kool!

thanks alot for the negine type tip...
i've been doing alot of homework on the tranny problem, and i was hoping there would be some hidden secret to fixing the problem, but what you said is what i was thinking... i just don't feel like taking half the front end apart so i hope it's just low on fluid. i think i'll just change it altoghether.

No...

The engine for a stock NON GSR G2 is a B18A1. It sounds like your throwout bearing went out.

As far as interchangeability... There is a difference in transmissions.

94+ INTEGRA uses a hydraulic transmission on all it's models.
90-93 Integra transmissions are interchangeable but if you get a clutch kit get it for your specific year because they are different (dont know how, But they are).

Excuse me DarkDB1 you are incorrect.
The motor that my friend lucas here has is a B18B1 (assuming it is stock). In 1992 Acura sold the LS motor (B18B1) or the GSR (B17A1) motor. Don't post false statements as fact if they are not true, especially in the form of telling someone with the correct info that they are wrong. If you question someone's statement... look it up.

Just because you know 1 person with a G2 does not mean you know everything about it. I know hundreds of people with G2 integra's and have own/ed 2 of them myself.

Yes, But there are different types of YS1.

There's the basic YS1. Then the GSR YS1 which has shorter gears.

Riiiiiight
I have owned 4 G2 Integras 2 GS's, 1 LS, 1 GSR
I know more people with G2's then the amount of people you know in total.
When he asked about his motor I admit I thought it was the B18A1. But I looked it up to be sure.

Funny that you got your info the same place as I.

"Other small updates came on to all trim levels in 1992, namely new front and rear bumpers, a new steering wheel, new taillights, new ECU, chromed interior door handles and a change to the B18B1 engine which increased the power to 140 hp (104.4 kW) for the non-VTEC engine."

It looks like we have some conflicting info here.
I apologize if my source is incorrect. I tried to look it up on hondanews.com but they dont mention the engine code.

It ticked me off that you just rebuked my info when I even went through the trouble to look it up.

edit... technically I own 2 more G2's that i didnt mention... I didn't count them because I am parting them out.

Actually, I had to look it up on google to find a way to prove what i was saying. I just know it by being a member on G2IC for the last 4 years and being the lead coordinator for dozens of successful meets (20 G2s +)

Wikipedia is wrong, DarkDB1 is right. B18B1 is 94-01. The main difference to the B18A in 92-93 was switching to OBD1 from OBD0.

I knew that they switched from OBD0 to OBD1 that is what made me think that they changed the engine code as well...
