Drop the speed limit to 55mph and help fight terrorism, lower gas prices, help earth!

So if I get a hybrid do I still have to do 55mph?

Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk 2
Yes, you should. Cars are still generally at their most efficient at 55 mph, so a Prius at 55 mph might get 55 mpg whereas a Prius at 65 mph may only get 50 or so.

Isn't getting a motorcycle lisence much harder?
Sorry for the late response, but no it really isn't.

When you have to drive long distances to see family, go to work, etc. a 70mph speed limit comes in much more handy than a freaking 55mph speed limit. Also pretty much all of us have a daily driver Integra which is not a gas guzzler.

Some things you can do to save gas, drive safely, and pollute less

-Routine Oil/filter changes
-Routine Tire pressure checks
-Don't use A/C when you don't need to (What I do to keep my car cool: At low speeds open the windows and moonroof and blast the air, at high speeds I just open the moonroof since air is already flowing through the vents)
-Brake only when needed
-Use Cruise Control
-Don't carry around unnecessary weight in your car
-Make sure the cat is clean and working properly
-Accelerate lightly
-Make sure the engine/car is in perfect running condition with little to no leaks

You know what's much more dangerous than driving at higher speeds? Not paying attention while driving and not keeping up with the flow of traffic. I'd much rather have everyone go 15mph over the speed limit with both hands on the wheel and both eyes on the road than some twat texting and going 10mph slower than everyone else.

To add to above post

Don't use cruise control on roads with hills, you waste more full because the cruise control has no light tough. Will drop a gear and go hard on the gas

So cars that get decent fuel mileage don't have to strive for more?

If you don't mind what kind of fuel economy do you get from your Integra?

People who do 55pmg on the highway are stupid and dangerous. Everyone else doing 60-70mph has to go around them which causes too many lane changes and a higher risk of causing a collision (especially in heavy traffic). Do the speed limit, no more and no less.

If you want 50+mpg buy a Prius and own it for 15 years, by then it should pay for itself in gas. That or invest in running shoes.

I'm not driving 55 on the highway when the speed limit is 65 or 70 that's the end of that. Nor would I ever want the national speed limit to be set to 55. I get 26 around town (I live in a very hilly area) and 32 on the highway.

I already have a 6 hour drive without any Atlanta traffic to see my family in Georgia, if the speed limit was 55mph or lower the whole way there it would easily be a 10 hour+ drive. Driving for 10+ hours alone obviously isn't safe so I'd have to stay in a hotel for a night. There, not only has your 55mph national speed limit law further inconvenienced me, but it is now costing me more money than before.

You know what law is actually going to save lives and ultimately money on the road? No texting while driving.

Yeah it's more efficient to speed up before going up a hill and then let off the gas while going up it opposed to just using cruise control.

You can get give any advice on fuel economy, getting 26/32 is bonkers low.

Also, ten hours alone is not dangerous; just need ways to keep yourself focused. Also 6 hours to 10 hours would be a 67% increase, speed limits going from 65 to 55 would not change that.

BTW, google maps claims its only a four hour drive anyway.

You lose a good amount of mpg when you drive an automatic 4 speed instead of a 5 speed manual that's for sure. I actually log my mps, those are real figures not exaggerated.

It would be a 70 to 55mph change for around 100 miles of the trip. No matter what route you take from Florida to Atlanta you will always be driving through construction, interstate traffic, and Atlanta traffic. On any given day you can be stuck in Atlanta traffic from 30 minutes to a hour and a half. But enough of that I know how long it takes to drive to my own home smartass.

You say driving long distances isn't dangerous if you keep yourself focused? I say the same to driving fast, that's an opinion. I can also say I've gotten very close to an accident from driving long distances when fatigued while speed has never put me anywhere near getting into a collision.

You know what else is dangerous? Switching lanes while not keeping up with the flow of traffic, merging onto the highway below highway speeds, and pretty much any moving vehicle/person/object on the road going well below the speed limit.

Even with an auto, that's still rather bad.

And cool that you track you economy, I've got about 30k miles tracked over the last couple years, so I don't exaggerate either.

I've never seen it underestimate time driving.

For an auto, I would say thats decent. I never get over 30 mpg's on the highway.
