Just bought, now overheats

I just bought my Integra literally a week ago. Saturday, (it was about 85 degrees here) I was driving to Tuscaloosa (about an hour and a half away) when I go about an hour into the trip I noticed the temp gauge slowly climbing. Well I got off at the next exit (less than 1/4mi) and as soon and I began to decelerate, the temp gauge was almost pegged. We parked it, and let it cool off for about 45 minutes, then checked the fluid. It was low, so we put about half a jug of radiator fluid in it and went on our way. The rest of the way there it didn't get over normal temp. On our way home that evening nothing happened, but by then the temp outside had cooled down by almost 20 degrees.

Yesterday, I had to drive to Athens, AL, about another hour and a half away from where I stay. Again, about an hour into the trip it overheated. So we parked it at a cracker barrell until about 9:30pm. Drove it the final 30 miles and again, she did fine. We thought it was the thermostat, so we went the the local Advanced and bought one there, but we couldn't get the back bolt off and didn't have the tools we needed to do it there. I went home, and SSDD. Had to stop an hour into the trip and finish my final 30 after it began raining so it was cooled down outside.

It doesn't show the temp has risen any until I slow way down or if I stop, then it just slowly goes up and down. I stopped at my local shop where a few buddies work so I could trouble shoot the problem. Come to find out the fluids aren't circulating through the system properly. So the water pump seems to be the problem. I still plan on replacing the thermostat as well though, seeing as how I already bought one. I am trying not to dump any money into the car just yet seeing as how I am trying to save up so I can move to TN by October, but looks like I may have too. So here in thought, what's the best water pump to get/which parts store? I've looked online but I don't want to get just any pump, I've had too many in my recent cars go out from all different stores. So any advice yall? It's much appreciated.

In my experience parts like that are best replaced with oem replacements. I'd try getting one from a dealer and having myself or someone who can do it for a good price help me out installing

I know a garage who will give you a damn good deal and I will guarantee the mechanic is an ace. J.B. Halls garage, Buhl, Alabama. Not far from Tuscaloosa city, it's in Tuscaloosa county. Advanced auto will have the cheapest water pump.

My family has always used autozone's duralast brand for car parts. Never had problems out of them, even water pumps and thermostats.

water pumps are not really that expensive and its not a part youd want to go back and redo. Oem parts are often cheaper buying online from a discount source. You get list price which is most likely what youll pay at a dealer, sometimes more, and the discount price.

That ones for a 94 ls so make sure you order whatever part matches your car.

You will often not overheat while driving until you are slowing down or coming to stops like in city traffic. While cruising along on a high way, air flow through the engine bay is more constant. So people usually see overheating begin when they slow down, exit freeway or just light to light. Once you lose that constant airflow over the radiator the fan kicks in to regulate cooling of the radiator. Obviously without coolant or flowing liquid the fan wont help at all. Be cautioned that you may be losing fluid so check for leaks and monitor your fluid levels for the days following a fill up. With cooling systems one problem can often result in another.

Ah yes. I had the same problem, but mine started with the fans not coming on. I believe it was the ect sensor. Then after that, it kept overheating, and let's just say the headgasket and water pump are both getting changed.

Ouch. Every time it would get just a little above normal, I would pull over and let the poor thing cool off. I still plan on flushing the system and changing the thermostat regardless cause I haven't done it yet. But it looks like I have a long day ahead of me tomorrow.

How many miles does the car have on it? Honda recommends changing water pump at 90K miles. When you do this, also replace the timing belt and the timing belt tensioner. You will then be good for another 90K miles.

You can usually see if the water pump is moving water. Take the cap off and start the car. Let it warm up with the radiator cap off. Watch the water in the hole. When it gets to operating temperature the water will suck down when the thermostat opens. You should then see it circulating. If it's not moving at all, it's certainly the water pump. Mine (when replaced) did not show any wear and the bearings were still tight, but it did not move water whatsoever.

Good luck to you! Sorry this happened so early into your ownership. Fix it, and drive it for another bunch of years. These are excellent cars.
