Yeah man you gotta ask yourself how much hp u really want to have when alls said and done. Cause yeah you'll gain a nice amount of hp doin an ls/vtec, but then what happens when you get a taste of more power? You'll want more, like everyone else does when they get bit by the HP bug.a Ls/vtec turbo would be the shit but expect it not to be the most reliable car in the world. Its gonna cost u up the ass to do it the right way,or should I say the safest reliable way for your engine. If it were me I would jus boost the LS cause there's so much more u can do to get some more ponies out of your motor after your whole turbo set-up has been installed. Larger turbo, bigger intercooler, forged internals, ported head, etc. But it all comes down to is you. What type of budget u have, how much HP you want, if the cars a daily D , and shit like that. But sounds like your bro gots everything you need for a good turbo build. While if your Ls vtecing it sounds like you still got bout 1500 bucks in parts your still gonna need. For example I hear if ya don't use forged rods your jus setting your self up to loose it all when your revving your motor to 8000 rpm, and a stock rod decides to break and puts a hole in your block, you'll need to get a new ecu, did ur head come with all the valves and springs, distributor, vtec solenoid ? You'll probably wanna get a new gauge cluster too. And that aint counting the skunk2 intake manifold you were wanting. Add it all up and it would come pretty damn close to that 1500 price range. But hey that's jus my 2 cents . I would sell the head and all the ls vtec goodies , and use the money to get the turbo setup.
