I think we need to get a few terms straight.
"CRANKING" and "TURNING OVER" are the same thing.
"FIRING" is different.
If it's "CRANKING" or "TURNING OVER" it is just rotating the motor.
If it is "FIRING" you have fuel and spark.(Or at least spark.)
Cranking - When the engine is being turned by the starter motor in preparation for starting.
Turning over - When it actually starts firing and running.
The reason why you can't say "firing" is because that doesn't necessarily mean it's running.
I have helped many people like this and help them diagnose their problem.
(Obviously first step is engine codes.)
For instance for not starting symptoms.
No Crank = Starter, Alternator, Battery, Fuses Relay, etc...
Not turning over = Dizzy, Rotor, CAP, Coil, Wires, Plugs, Sensors, Fuel pressure, Fuel pump, Injectors, etc...
So therefore are different, but everyone has their own definition. That's how it used to be back in the days. Everyone seems to have begun to get it confused now due to noobs and everyone changing it around now.
