^this, lol

I was a tech at Big O, and a cool ass kid fresh outta UTI got a lube tech job at $8.75. He was not to happy.
Go to your local community collage and see if they have any automotive programs.
I would reccomend a ASE class in L1 or auto trans. lots o' money.

It's not the education that affects what you learn or where your placed afterwards. It's you and how you apply yourself. Even though you can learn everything yourself with a few books and a couple engines to toy with. That way takes a lot longer but your not out 20 grand. Or get a job as an apprentice in a local shop. There are a lot of choices. But it all comes down to what you wanna learn and how bad you wanna learn it.

I dated a guy that did UTI right out of high school (he's 24 now). He did get hired as a mechanic at a few places since then, But each place he's the only one that has went to UTI (or even wyotech) at the shops. he calls it a waste of money and time. These weren't high end mechanic positions either, I think the most he made since he started working was $16 a hour as a janitor at a hospital for 2 years... A few other friends with similar stories.

I didn't know it was all that bad until I started the process of signing up for UTI to do autobody (took 2 courses in high school and was remarkably good at it [or so the teachers were telling me])... I got pretty close to going... Had my own recruiter, Took 2 tours of the Sacramento school, had financing, my dad was forking over quite a bit of the $32K a year course and had the recruiter looking at apartments/duplex's for me as well as we were looking ourselves (family does reality)... Because I refused to have room mates and demanded a garage for my at the time BMW (and the place had to allow pets because I haz a kitty, The recruiter asked me if I was willing to get rid of the cat since my dad is allergic to him  ). :???:

It really is about who you know... It's how I got a city job ($23 a hour w/full benifits) a few months after I graduated high school, And I might even be getting a better paying job with caltrans if my connections come through for me.
