If your painting a hood just use a heavy grit to get rid of the main layer of paint. It doesn't have to be done perfect, but scratched enough to let the primer stick. Then apply primer, and if needed, sand and repaint to make an even coat. Then do your color, I did my roof and I used black. Do a first coat, wait until it dries and wetsand it. Clean it off, do a second coat, let it dry, wetsand and clean. Do that for however many coats you need until there is an even coat. Mine took like 4 coats. Since I did a flat black, I didn't use a clear coat, but if you want to use a clear coat it's the same method. Take your time though, if you rush thru it, it won't turn out as good. Then, use a buffing compound and cover it, and buff it out. It should look like it was done professionally, and at a 1/4th the cost. I also used this method a couple times to restore carbon fiber clear coats on my friend's hood.
