The Mugen valve cover goes for about $800, but the Spoon goes for about $250. They're both basically the same, keeping motors normally aspirated in mind. Their suspension products are also very similar, but Mugen actually makes body kits for some models.
As for a Spoon B series engine, yeah they go for about 6g's retail, but, it's fully balanced and is more reliable than a Skunk 2 equipped B series. Very fairly priced for a brand new crate motor that is built for endurance racing. You'd have to see one perform to believe it.
Spoon and Mugen are well worth the money if you want performance, quality, and reliability. It pays off to have these, not only so you don't get laughed at for having cheap stuff, but also if you race your car on a regular basis. These two companies emphasize total balance. That's what wins the race.

spoon engines are a ripoff as well. they take crate motors, do machine work, and install new spoon parts.
they do good work, but it's still incredibly over priced
for the cost of a spoon motor, you can build a regular gsr to destroy it in both autox and drag

that is all you need to know about why they are priced high. also they are exclusive japanese parts, meaning imported drectly from japan to select U.S. distributors. IMO as far as the spoon engines and valve covers go....overpriced. www.inlinfour.com sells them. they are balanced+blueprinted+spoon headgasket. for that price($5,880-B16A, $6,125-B16B, $6,370-B18C) you could have a very reputable engine tuner here in the states balance+blueprint+ install a spoon headgasket+ some headwork and probably even cams. parts quality though is extremely and I mean extremely good. I prefer mugen over spoon though because they compete in the USTCC and spoon doesnt to my knowledge.

You get what you pay for, that's why Spoon and Mugen are so darn pricey. It's very high quality stuff made to perform and last a long time. But it's also true that because they are such marquee names, that part of their cost is for the name brand and level of prestige that comes with buying their parts. They've reached the level of status symbol. Just like whe you buy a Mercedes or a Jaguar or Porsche ect...high quality cars no doubt, but your also paying extra for the name here, too.
Some items made by Spoon are so grossly overpriced, its an insult. For instance their sexy blue crush-proof radiator hoses, they're freakin gorgeous and I've always wanted them in my car, but not for $335, thank you, I'll pick up some generic hoses from Autozone for $30 instead. One item I have found that aren't real overpriced are their magnetic drain plug sets. Great engine/tranny insurance for only $40.

I believe that Mugen is a division of Honda, kinda like SVT is to Ford. Both of them have the quality control as Honda does so you can expect very high quality out of them. As for the why they are expencive, First off you got a name and you got amazing quality and they last for ever.
