soggy carpet?

Ok on the drivers side of my DA the carpet feels a bit damp but behind the drivers seat its completely soaked. On the passengers side it sort of the opposite behind the seat the carpet feels slightly damp but in the front the carpet is wet.

I didnt notice there was any problem till winter came thats when i noticed it was slightly damp but I didn't realize how bad it was till today.

What i want to know is: What are all the possible causes for this? Which is the most common which is the easiest to fix and which is cheapest.

The reason i want to know all this is so I can start from the siplest solution and work my way up if the problem isn't resolved.

I would also like to include that I have a trunk leak not exactly sure where the water leaks in from but I suspect its the tail lights since its a salvaged title due to rear end collision and the new tail lights i put in didn't quite line up. any how a good amount of water seeps in to the trunk which is why I ghetto rigged a hole at the bottom of the trunk for it to drain out. any way the watter collects on the upper left and right sides of the trunk before it makes it down to the bottom my suspicion is that while in movement it is possible that some of the water can make its way in to the inside of the car throught the bottom of the back seat but it seems unlikely because there stuff in the way like the seat and the moldings of the frame and shell of the car that would prevent water seepage.

What do you guys think I should look at??

Please give me all options and be very thorough.

I would greatly appreciate it.

This has happened to me before too but not in the same case as you.

You most likely have a hole or a crack somewhere either on the tail lights or maybe even on your inner door trim i would say. Or maybe even from your a/c. Its could not be working properly and it leaks on the floor soaking it. :what:

edit: Its obviously coming from the back of your car somewhere. Since you said the back mats are soaks front are just damp.

yeah but the drivers side is doing the opposite of the passengers side. The drivers side tells me that the water is coming from the rear but the passenger side tells me the front is the culprit..... so maybe its both?

Could possibly be.

Second gens have an issue with the cowl leaking. There are little clips that secure and seal the cowl, so that would be the first thing I looked at. That would create the wetness on the passenger floorboard. The water behind the driver seat may simply be from the water on the passenger floorboard flowing that way, potentially because of an incline you park on.

Yea, definitely the cowl leaking. There are these little plastic pieces you need to replace. Search g2ic.com for a good write up on how to replace it. As for the trunk, you are either leaking through the tail light gaskets, or more likely your drain plugs came undone. There is one on each side behind the plastics.

Talking about these little guys? I've replaced mine and it still leaks, I know people have had success with silicone. Might want to have a friend hose the car down while you search for the leak. Never hurts.

Part number.

This is a list I put together in an earlier thread: It is based on my knowledge of the 95 GSR so not everything will apply to your car.

Water cominging from moonroof:
Clogged drain tube(s) are just one of the possibilities. Also check rubber gaskets around the moonroof. This type of leak should show up in the headliner.

Water in the driver's or front passenger footwell:
This could indicate that the problem is either where the drain hose goes into the rubber valve or a problem with the rubber valve itself. A leak around the windshield could also be the culprit.

Water in the rear seat footwells:
This is probably water that has sloshed over the gas tank from the trunk and would indicate standing water in the trunk. If the water is in this area only I would check the seal around the quarter windows.

Trunk/Hatch Area:
Driver's Side
1. Bottom of antenna mast to hose.
2. Antenna mast hose to y connection on 'rubber' valve.
3. Moon roof hose to 'rubber' valve.
4. Blockage in 'rubber' valve.

Passenger Side
1. Moon roof hose to 'rubber' valve.
2. Blockage in 'rubber' valve.

Other possible points of entry for water; where antenna passes through the body, rear taillight gaskets failure, rubber trim around the hatch itself and the overflow drain from the gas filler.

If you are not sure where the problem is, remove the interior at the "suspect" location so you can see the possible leak points. Have friend spray the car with a hose while you sit inside and look for the leak.

Have you actually checked the moonroof drain hoses for blockage? This is easy. With the moonroof open, CAREFULLY pour a cup of water into each of the four drain holes in the moonroof. If water comes out on the ground behind the respective front or rear wheel that hose is not blocked.

If one is blocked, I would try LOW PRESSURE air to try and clear the blockage. If this doesn't work I would then clear the rubber valve where the drain hose exits the car. This has a design flaw that allows debris to buld up until it blocks the drain. This causes the water to leak from where the hose slides into the valve. HINT: Reassemble with silicon.

Hope this helps

I will check the sun roof tubes then I'll try all the rest... I'm a bit overwhelmed with all the info. I need images of the plugs and seals that might be damaged. I'll also take pictures of whatever I do and post them up it might help someone else later on.

for now does anyone know of a detailed post with images somewhere??

for now thinking of taking the carpet out and checking the rear seats to see if water appears to be transferring from the trunk to the rear floor pan. check the sunroof and check g2ic.com to see if I find anything helpful.

damn thanks gray ghost!! :]

I'm just waiting for a nice day to take a look at it. I've had nothing but rain in the last three days.

A leak and three days of rain. Sounds like the definition of a CAR POOL. Good luck on finding your leak.
