Oil in the cylinder or valves off?

So I had slight clicking coming from the engine. Figured it was the valves so I preformed a valve adjustment. my first time doing a valve adjustment but im fairly sure I did it right.

Put the car in 5th gear and pushed it till it was at tdc. What ever cam lobes were were on the closed side I would slide the feeler gauge of .007 between the cam and the rocker head and tighten the screw and bolt till the feeler gauge had a slight drap. Once I was done with all the closed lobes I would push the car 180 and do the same as before to the now open lobes.

While I had the valve cover off I ended up doing the valve cover gasket and spark plug seals and cleaned the oil out of the number 3&4 spark plug wells best I could.

When I started the car it seemed like it wasnt firing on one of the cylinders. I pulled a wire off one by one to try and figure out which one it was. When I pulled of the number 4 wire the car didnt change how it was idling so I figured it was that cylinder. Checked to make sure it was sparking and it was. Switched the number 3&4 spark plugs and it didnt make a difference

I really need the car this week end for work. ANY help would be good

Its a brown top swap in my 3g civic so the car was really easy to push. Lol. Didnt think about just turning the crank though. Feel like an idiot. I know the service manual says different then .007 but I have zc cams and the valve lash for the zc is .007. But how did I do it wrong? If you could elaborate it would really help me out

It’s hard to decipher how you did it and type a novel about how to do it correctly when you could read the procedure over again. There are how to articles on team-integra also.

Are you sure you had each cylinder at TDC when you did the adjustment for that cylinder? That is likely where you went wrong. Being off a little is still a lot. Also, after you finished adjusting the valve did you double check your work? Meaning did you take out your .007 and try to slide in a .008+ to make sure you didn't go too large?

It just sounds like you didn't have them at TDC when you adjusted the valves. I am willing to bet compression is lower in those cylinders because the valves not shutting all the way. I agree with muckman though. Read the service manual and redo the entire process. This time by turning the crank. Make sure you turn the motor over the correct way too(Counter clockwise).

Alright Ill try and redo them at what the manual says and honestly I didnt think about checking with a bigger gauge. I did check with the .007 though and they all checked out before I closed it. That is a good idea that I didnt think of that I will definitely put to use this time around

No worries man. We all learned by trial and error. Props to you for trying to do it yourself. Let us know how it goes after the second time.

no its the easiest because its the highest gear.. thats why if you park on a hill you put it in 1st not 5th. Try it in your car and see.. Not much different then when its in neutral
