Need Exhaust Opinions - Turbo Guys Only!

So from my research, and talking with my tuner- it would seem that 3" exhaust is the way to go with the turbo set up. It's about time to get that on the road and I'll have to take the car in to the shop to get the exhaust built soon.

I am just not sure how to go about with the exhaust setup. I mean a 3" exhaust is a good start.. but mufflers? I don't want this car to be loud- at all. About as loud as OEM, a bit louder is okay. I want it no louder then my car is now.. and my exhaust is stock with the cat missing. (Just straight piped instead of a cat.)

I hear the turbo itself will quiet the exhaust a bit. Will one muffler be sufficient if i'm not running a cat? Do I need to go buy something else to put in the exhaust? Should I just go with a smaller exhaust size? 2.5 / 2.75" perhaps ?

And another thing- what about my downpipe? Looking around I see 2.5" downpipes.. but they run into 3" exhausts. I have the flange for the downpipe but I had planned to have the exhaust guy build the downpipe. Should it match the diameter of the exhaust or be a little smaller?

Will running an open dumptube be loud or should I have that tied into the downpipe as well?

Thanks in advance.

a straight 3 inch custom exhaust with a 3inch magnaflow is what i have and sounds nice, but if you want a legit exhaust then check out thermal research exhausts, they sell bolt up 3 inch turbo exhausts for our cars.

I've had my hands in on a bunch of builds both N/A and Forced Induction... The most recent FI was a street car that made 400 whp with a full exhaust minus the catalytic converter we ran 3" downpipe with 3" straight pipe off that back to a Magnaflow 3" muffler it was very quiet and as stated it made just over 400 whp at 18psi at 7200 rpms if you need any other info on our setup PM me I would be glad to answer any questions

Is your car loud? The exhaust is being built by a family friend at his exhaust shop. It will be a lot cheaper. I just need to know what I should do to actually muffle it.

Edit:
I'm not really worried about the power output. I won't be pushing it as far as power goes. However it will be a daily driver, and I don't really like the idea of my car being super loud and attracting more cops then it needs to.

Edit Edit:
And K Strat, if possible I'll keep the questions in this thread in case anyone else needs information on the topic. Always handy to be able to search and find answers. :)

Oh and about the dumptube either tie it into your downpipe or be careful with placement because improper placement can make a real mess of your engine bay

I suppose I'll just have it tied into the down pipe then.
Do either of you have a link or part number to the specific muffler you're running?

I suppose I could just buy a 3" muffler and have a resonator plumbed in if the car is too loud for me.

Yeah thats fine to keep it in the thread just PM me and let me know that you have asked me something in the thread and I will jump in with my reply just incase I dont come back and see you asked something but yeah the 3" with magnaflow wont draw attention

I cant remember the part number on the magnaflow muffler but I'm pretty sure all their 3" mufflers are the pretty close to the same and a resonator will always tone it down if its to loud

Yeah I would try that first see how that sounds to you then if its to loud which it shouldnt be add the resonator in

It sounds like it would be really loud- but I've never heard a Honda with a 3" exhaust/magnaflow. I guess it all depends on the muffler really.. the closest thing i've owned is my F350 with a 3" exhaust- and that sucker was loud haha.

Does anyone else have a suggestion for a muffler brand? (Or idea's of quieting it down..)

Shut up baby, I know it!
maintaining velocity in your exhaust is what is key, so you want a series of high and low pressure areas that develop from varying pipe sizes. the header i use in my car cones out from 2.0 to 2.5, originally i had fed that into a 2.5" system but 9400rpm's tuning has me changing that to a 3" exhaust with the supercharger system. So like the header, it will flare out yet again behind the 2.5" cat into a 3" exhaust which should main sufficient velocity in the key area that needs it, while minimizing backpressure.

VRS exhaust is sending me my 3" exhaust pipes, i would also recommend kteller, im putting a dynomax race bullet, the longest one they sell in 3" in the mid section, those style mufflers are better suited as far away from the hot side of the exhaust so tht the fiberglass does not melt, they also provide the best sound reduction towards the tail section. So make note of this. Im also getting a solo performance stealth muffler, which is a bit pricey but i feel it will be worth it.

Its funny you started this Topic Prozon, Because I was actually about to post the same kind of subject, and then I saw yours.

I just got my downpipe fabricated and its running into my stock piping (for now). I had them put a little flex pipe just before a high flow cat then into the stock piping. They made it so I can just unbolt the stock piping and bolt on what ever i get later.
It sounds pretty quiet. at least Unoticableby turbocharged. I have a leak at my cheap turbo inlet gasket and I'm going to replace that today.
My Exhaust is the Obx Twinloop a.k.a. Mugen twinloop replica.
Its hard to judge how quiet the twinloop will be because of that leak, but I will let you know how it turns out later on today when I fix that. (I will possibly get a sound clip up)

obx twinloop was the worst muffler i ever put on my car, i literally came home from the muffler shop, and sawzawed it off the car

The flange for my downpipe arrived today, so within the next few days the turbo is going on. I just need to figure out what's going to go on with the exhaust.
