More Turbo Questions!

Don't hurt me, i'm trying to learn.
Any links you want to throw in with some replies would be good too.

First question is about the tune. Everybody keeps stressing a tune whenever a turbo is involved. So I was wondering a few things.. I hear about people getting Hondata ecu's and such. Is this required or is it just "a good idea?" I heard that you can chip the stock OBD1 Ecu. (But not Obd0 or 2?) Is that true? Any other information about tuning could get sprinkled on top too. :)

Second question is about the exhaust. Is there a requirement for the size? Is it bad to run a stock exhaust, with no cat, or do I need to upgrade to a bigger pipe?

Regarding engine internals.. I am going to upgrade to ARP head studs but other than that it's going to be a stock block. Would it really be needed to upgrade the connecting rod bolts or can I skip that? Mind you, i'm not planning to exceed 300hp..

I can't think of my other questions right now.. so that will do. If anyone could answer these I'd be grateful. *Stares at Tam*

I don't know how new to forced introduction you are haha but I love this site

http://www.homemadeturbo.com/f7/noobs-look-here-if-you-want-build-turbo-kit-all-info-stock-wg-settings-27245/

I find there's good info there anyways.

A tune is needed, whether it be hondata, neptune, crome etc
You don't specifically need a hondata ecu.
There more tuning information and about "chipping ecu's" in the link.

As far as the exhaust, a stock exhaust is gonna hold you back from the power you could have/could achieve.
A bigger pipe would be a benefit, yes.

What's your goals? 200whp? I think you'd be safe without upgrading your rod bolts with arp but it definatly wouldn't hurt at all too, it's not an expensive upgrade either. Stock sleeves/blocks can hold up to 300whp.

What I would do is pick up a block local throw that bitch on a engine stand and build it while your beating on your stock block :thumbs up

I'm fairly new to looking into this aswell but I hope I helped even a bit haha, Tam or anyone else correct me if I have mislead something... :)

Tam and I were discussing it as well. I'm still fairly new to it, I've never actually ran a turbo. I never planned to run one so soon.. but I got a mess of parts for a good deal, so I went with it..

Tuning by far has me lost though. Not even sure where to start.

I've got the basics of it down, components and such.. I just need that oh so important next step. :D

At least it was useful that time lol. I was like "Oh wait I should edit and mention that.." then I realize the rate it's loading while it's trying to post and figured it would double post.

I can predict my double posts now. :D

1: hondata is just the best chip you can buy, if you want to save money you can get a street tune on chrome but it wont be as good, id reccomend hondata s100 with a full dyno tune for the cheapest and safest rout.

2: i would deffinately get a bigger exhaust, 3inch is ussually the standard, id suggest getting a ebay muffler(trust me they sound good with a turbo) and just get a muffler shop to get you 3inch piping and weld it.

3: no, rod bolts only help if you are running higher rpms than stock, same goes when upgrading rods.

Your welcome

The above reccomendations are what i think are the most cost effective, there are plenty more options

I'm going to need to find a tuner. Or is this something I can do myself with your help Tam? :D
Does CROME work with the stock ECU ? Googling it now lol.

I need to find your cellular number so I can harass you via text message. xD
I've been reading for the last few hours lol.

Hopefully i'll know something in the next hour!

Edit:
What is Crome?
Simply put, Crome is an OBD1 Honda ROM Editor which lets you edit and add extra features to your stock ECU. This gives the ability for one to run a Honda B/D/H series engine with forced induction systems
Okay, so how the hell do you actually edit your stock ECU with CROME lol.

Well they are all just chips (hondata included) that a tuner will soulder into your ecu, then they plug their computer into the ecu harness and change the settings, exept with s300, they have a usb port in the side.

You should deffinately not do it your self, i have no idea how to tune either, it takes years and years of learning and experience to tune (luckily i have Tony Palo close by  ).
So you should find a reputable import shop that can tune on a dyno and let them do it. It should cost any where from $200- $400

$200-400? This car is just racking up a huge bill lol.
Rockadilla I've read that and most, if not all the links in it.

I will have to do some searching for a good shop around Western Washington.

What should I have ready to go to a tuner with?

rockadilla

thats right.
hondata or equivilent and ur car with the turbo connected. and ive heard that a good tune will cost about $800-1000. but i could be wrong on that.
also if u read all that u wouldve found out that the best size for an exhaust is 3" the stock is 2". and for internals as long as the engine is healthly u dont have to upgrade anything, as long as like u said, dont exceed 300whp

$1000!?!?
I wouldnt pay more than $500
A tune from Tony Palo (search him) is about $400 and thats the best tube you can buy, people come from allover the country to get tuned by him.

Kris, road trip here, get tuned and then we can cruise

But yeah, you will want a tune after every thing is installed on your car and it is running.
Search dyno tunes on youtube, thays what a tunning procces is.
They park your car on a dyno (wheels that your tires will turn) that reads the hp and tq, they will set up a basemap on your ecu, and finely tune your afr and other stuff
