Problem: Crank but no start

Description:

Okay so recently I had installed a viper one way remote start system into the car. It also controls the power locks from the key fob. Obviously the car has an immobilizer built into the ecu. I removed the immobilizer out of the ecu. Tested out the remote start and it fired right up. Everything was gravy. THEN I noticed something weird right as I was leaving my friends garage after finishing up the install. I went to manually start it up with the KEY and it cranked for a very long time before the car started.

So the car has been started up every morning with the key fob before work, and it starts right up no problem. After work come back to the car and try to start manually with the key, the same symptom: takes a long time to start (like 7-10 seconds).

1.) SO I try to trouble shoot it. I start the car with the key fob, start right up. Put key in, turn to the on position and press the brake pedal to give me control. Then I turn off the car by taking out the key. Try starting it with the key after a few seconds AND it takes forever to start up.

2.) So after I was able to start it up after 7-10 seconds, I turn it off by taking out the key. This time I try starting it back up manually again. Guess what, STARTS right up no problem. (Doesn't make much sense).

So this goes on for about 2 - 3 weeks. This Morning it decides to not want to start from the keyfob. I hear the car wanting to start from the inside of my house. I see it crank for 5-7 seconds. Then it repeats that 3 times before it automatically quits. I can't start it manually either. Just cranks. I know that it has fuel cuz I can smell it after trying to start for awhile. I haven't tried testing for spark yet because its raining and it cold.

**Before all of this the car never had a starting problem.

Please give me a guide of where to start and what to check next.

I am thinking of checking out the distributor this weekend and see if that is the cause.

Thanks a whole bunch, please comment if I should provide more info on the problem.

One thing to consider here is that the variable between your starting scenarios is the key. The remote start is wired directly to the car and does not need to go through the key cylinder. You could have wiring connections getting old, worn or loose. Take apart the steering column housing and inspect the cylinder. Its been suggested to me once as a problem but i never troubleshooted it much myself besides looking at it so some google searching might benefit you further on the subject.

Thanks for the reply NemesisCBR. I am looking into the ignition cylinder. There seems to be so many different symptoms for an ignition cylinder going bad. From what I understand is that your car will not crank if your ignition cylinder is bad, but I'm not 100% on that. I'm gonna check the connections underneathe the dash today as long as it isn't still raining. I remember pulling a few of them out to make it easier to splice into the wires for the remote start. Maybe one of them popped out.

Hopefully I will get it resolved soon.

Cheers
