what you are talking about is called "floating gears"
-=DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK=-
1: rev your engines fairly high
2: foot of the gas
3: shift to N
4: up shift (pressing against the wall of the next gear, it should fall into place when your rpm's drop to the right speed)

To down shift while floating gears is a little more complex
1: lower your rpm's to wear you can easily pull into N
2: while in N rev your rpm's up to a decent speed (make sure to rev your engine past where the tranny will match the engine)
3: let the rpm's drop while pushing against the gear your trying to shift to
