Actually, running slightly on the leaner side does nothing to the cat up to a certain point, its actually running rich that destroys your cat., and your o2 sensors. Catalytic converters in the 21st century, which not many of you appear to be in yet, are specifically designed to be compatible with high exhaust temps from boost applications, and do not use the same materials you would normally find in early 90s catalytic converters, or most any of the cats from the decade our cars were built. That being said, you dont want to run "slightly on the lean side for conserving gas", you want to be stoich at part throttle. Which means 14.7 AFR or in and around that AFR. Running slightly leaner not only increases EGT's but increases temperatures in your cylinders, on your valves, and your o2 sensors.
