Replace your timing belt, tensioner, accessory belts, and water pump at the same time.

That's a damn cool school lol.
The axle can't "pop out", it's secured to the engine via a bracket. It is quite possible that the axle just wore out though.

So where can I sign up for the school that fixes cars for free? :D

Edit:
Since when was an 18 year old car old? Damn.. I consider my '93 "new" and my "98" almost brand new. =)

yea i no my school is dumb, but it really isn't the school is the stupid kids who go there, that are umber than rocks, if the school was paying for it i wish something more expensive broke, but now i don't want to jynx myself haha

An axle can pop out. It slides within that bracket that holds it on the driver's side.

That little ring actually keeps it secure, or should keep it secure, inside of the transmission.

I didn't think it had enough play to cause damage. Mine will move very little with the bracket bolted up...
