Breather Filters? Crankcase Breathers?

So whats the deal with the small little air filters that they sell at advanced and stuff called a breather filter/crankcase breather?
Whats the point?
Whats it do?
Ive searched but only found a few things on it. Mabye someone could clear it up? Ive seen them on intake pipes and on the valve cover.
There like 10bucks at the local store.

it doesn't recycle burned fuel back into your engine..it helps your engine stay clean, and it helps dress up your engine if you want too..

it goes where the vacume line is for your intake. or its used for something else...hehe

its basically just giving it its own filter, when its sucks air through the hose its getting filtered air from the intake, so you just taking off the hose, plugging the hole and giving the valve cover its own filter
