the original block has a VIN plate on it. most swap motors will have the VIN plates removed

If you like your car, If you realize the fact that you won't get near the money back that you spend into it. I'd go for the b18c5 swap. I'm not from cali but i'd call DMV or whoever and ask them something like, I want to get a better/newer motor for my car what's required to get it legally swapped, If they ask just tell them what motor, b18c5, Than just find out what they say or what you got to do etc.

you can legally swap a B18c into a DA in Cali... many have done it.

They are commonly allowing people with B20 swaps to pass BAR too these days.

Only thing you cannot do is boost it or use non CARB approved aftermarket parts.
