Badfish, I don't think anyone was saying you can't build an automatic transmission. They were simply saying a torque converter would be an upgrade and no- that you couldn't put a conventional clutch into an automatic transmission.

Yes you can get upgraded clutch packs, friction plates, shift kits, ect ect.
If your worried about a slip I would try some stop-slip kind of things. Lucas makes a stop-slip for auto transmissions that i've seen very good results from.

If it's just too far gone, I would try a junkyard automatic transmission over a rebuild. I don't see any reason to build the transmission if your running a stock motor. A rebuild or a build-up would probably not be warranted on a stock motor. Especially with the cost of a rebuild.
