You f***ers with your crazy systems - Fahrenheit - ftw

Damn, that is an OG
It's much simpler in my opnion.

 Funny as hell haha that made my night. Sad part is, that last paragraph is true. My dad's a plastics engineer (he does works with hotrunners and injection molding) and I remember him telling me how he has to make different versions of diagrams for his designs, one in inches for the "idiots" in the workshop at his office to make a prototype and then another in metric units for the customers (all across the world) that will actually use it.
This^ In engineering, it's much easier to use the metric system for the simple reason it is more precise, with the use of milimeters.

I'll teach you... some day haha. It's not too hard to get down. Some quick conversions: 1 inch = 2.54cm = 25.4mm | 1mile = 1.6km | Farenheit = Celcius x 2 + 32 | Celcius = (Farenheit - 32)/2 | 1 gallon = 3.79L

And just remember, metric is all on a scale of powers of 10. Anything without a prefix like grams or metres = 10^0. Anything higher or lower the exponent changes. Few quick ones: centimetres = 10^-2 millimetres = 10^-3 kilometres = 10^3. That's really all you'll see :p

Lol the only reason I started using the thread is after I read your self quote in the siggy about n00bs who don't have a sense of community hahahah
Nice breakdown. Haha.

Sold the DA and got a 2003 GTI, sold the GTI and got a 95 M3, sold the M3 and got a 2011 GTI
I fucking love GTI's, especially the Mk IV. Jealous you had one. And a Mk VI.

I want a Mk III the most though:

Altough I don't care for the Jetta conversion like this one has.

That's not true. It's just easier to use whatever you are more comfortable with. We just go into thousandths, ten thousandths, hundred thousandths of an inch and so on. Metric would be easier for conversions since it is in denominations of 10, but there's just too many people around America that can't just easily visual what 600 micrometres may equal.

And I'm willing to bet the Engineers using the metric system do not use millimeter anyway, since the millimeter is not very precise at all. That is way too inaccurate. Explain how designing something down to the millimeter is more accurate than to the one thousandth of an inch, since 1mm = .039"

In my line of design, we measure out to two hundred-thousandths, as in .0002". Which by the way would be a touch over 5 thousandths of a millimeter. I guess that's not precise?

Yes, you're smarter than me. Thank you for making me look like fucking jask ass in the process of proving that. I work in an engineering firm, but do NOT do engineering work. I'm a facilities member. And whenever I've spoke to the engineers or asked questions, similar to this one, I was always told metric over imperial. And I'm sure it's a mix of both, I can't see them using only imperial or only metric up here, which is Canada by the way.

My intention was not to make anyone look like a jackass or anything of that nature. It was just purely conversation, no harm intended.

So anyway, I am curious...what do they use for precise measurement for drawings and design and things of that nature? Fractional millimeters? Micrometres? I would guess they may just use fractional millimeters out to the 100th or so that way you could still cover the longer measurements without your whole number getting too long and out of control.

Not a big deal, just a curious inquiry from the the land of inches lol
Well, their answer wasn't any more clarifying. Said that it's pretty well split between them, that there are always situations where you need one or the other. And I asked about the thousandths, and he said that unless they're maching stuff, it doesn't need to go that far down the scale. One guy was a Civil/Structural and the other was a Piping/Process engineer.

Edit: They both are used up here. Our speed is km/h, most food is in litres and kilos, but meat at restaurants is in oz., from the butcher in pounds, certain things are measured in inches, such as plywood. I dunno man, I dunno. Then I hear the expression "A mile a minute" a fair bit. I guess 1.6 kilometers a minute doesn't quite work.

Ah, yeah I guess they wouldn't get as much into it. I am in design engineering in the R&D field so I use it all the time.

just got back from the dentist. the left side of my mouth and face is numb. lol i look like i just had a stroke. not to mention, when i'm smiling, i don't know if my whole face is smiling or just half of it. sureeeeee hope this wears off...
