96gsr-what parts to buy?HELP PLEASE

hey, my dad bought me a 96 GSR with 138 k miles and its salvage becuase it is a stolen recovery for
$ 3,300 is this a pretty good price? Are the intakes and mufflers on ebay good for the price? Should i go with a Cai or short ram intake? also if i got a cai would i need a bypass-valve? also what is the difference between a cat back exaust and muffler-exaust? and i want to lower my car but i dont want a crappy ride, so what would be some good gas shocks, coilover, etc. for a low price? and if anyone knows a site where i can buy car parts for good prices? and sorry about all of the questions.please help me out THANKS

-$3,300 is a good price, if the body and interior are really nice it's an even better deal.

-You get what you pay for, but for the price the "Ebay" short ram intakes are a good deal, its kinda hard to screw up making a foot long tube, you know? The mufflers I would stay away from, the probably sound ricey and horrible.

-Cold air intakes are better than short rams only in the lower rpm's. Short rams are better in the upper rpm's. I say don't bother with a by-pass valve because you need to literally submerge the filter on a cai to suck up water, its not easy to do.

-A cat back exhaust is a whole new exhaust from the end of catalytic converter all the way back-muffler and everything. A muffler exhaust is just a muffler. Just getting a new muffler isn't going to help you gain much power at all, your better off in the long run getting a catback because it comes with larger than stock piping.

-I have the Eibach Pro Kit and I like them alot, a modest drop and a comfortable ride. I also have Koni yellow shocks (the ones with adjustable stiffness) and they're great too, but a bit expensive for shocks.

-You just have to search around the internet to find the best prices. There's hundreds of car parts sites.

These are all really general answers to your questions. If you want more in depth, specific answers you may want to ask more specific questions, one or two at a time. Some people see posts like this and don't feel like writing an essay to answer them all. But your new to the site and new to modding, so its cool. Just a little FYI... welcome and don't be a stranger! :)

stay away from DC headers. I have owned two and they both cracked. a good header for cheap? maybe greddy or a integra type-r. if you only want to spend even less($100 or so) then make sure you buy a stainless header not ceramic. as for exhaust, spend some money and get a greddy evo. you'll spend around $200 for the headers I mentioned and around $400 for the exhaust mentioned on ebay. if you can, buy a carbon fiber intake, they hold out heat very well. and suspension, tein springs and tokico whites are very good especially for the price($150 for springs around $70 per shock/strut). hope that helps and maybe you should spend some money on an engine rebuild.

thanks man! so the integra type r header will fit my gsr engine? Where can i get the tein springs and tokico whites from for that price or a good price? how much should a engine rebuild cost? And if anyone has any tein springs, tokico gas shocks, intake, header, sway bars, and strutbars, intake manifold, or any other parts for sale for a 96 gsr let me know. Thanks

inline4four, you think he has the cash for an engine rebuild? He's on here asking for the cheapest this and that, asking about Ebay fart cans and stuff. Not to mention he's obviously quite newb (no offense, dude) and has a hell of a lot of learning about his car to do before getting that advanced with the mods. All I had on my car the first 2 and a half years I owned it was a CAI and an exhaust, springs and rims, because I wanted to educate myself before going out and wasting money on parts that weren't useful to me or got me closer to the goals I had for my car.
Dude, before you go throwing any old part you can get your hands on into your car, understand what that part is going to do for your cars performance, and how it will interact and affect how the other parts perform with it. Because if you put on parts that don't work well together, your car will be slower than it is now. You sure as HELL don't want one of your first mods to be an Intake manifold. A mod like that is WAY down the road....AFTER you get cams and pistons, to say the least!

will the integra type r header fit my gsr? and are the ebay intakes that bad?(fart cans) And yes im totally newbie, but i would love to learn ! Does any one know a site or book or anything that i can learn alot from? TegSox on your first car what parts did you use to lower it? because im only 16 and without a job and dont have alot of money. when people cut there shocks, springs and the ride gets all messed up, as long as i dont get that when i lower my car im ok with it. And if anyone has a intake or header for sale let me know?

A Type R header will bolt up to your GSR head, but its longer than the stock GSR exhaust manifold. You'll need to get an aftermarket catalytic converter at the same time and put them on together. I recommend a Carsound cat, they're good quality and aern't too much money on Ebay. The end pipes of the cat will need to be cut to legnth to meet up with the ITR header and the stock B pipe location, and then have flanges welded on.

Will the ebay intakes give me any hp gains or anything? or are they really fart cans? also can someone tell me some things i can read to learn? sites book etc. thanks

Yes, even cheap Ebay intakes will give you more HP.

A "fart can" is a cheap aftermarket muffler.
People don't get aftermarket mufflers to gain HP, it's mostly just for the looks and sound. You won't hardly gain any HP from getting only a muffler, maybe 1 or 2 HP way up in the rpm range, but that's about it.

And how do i know when my vtech kicks in? does the car get loader or what? and how much horsepower does a 96 gsr have stock?

damn dude. ok he said he was getting a new exhaust anyway so the ITR header would work since he'd be getting a custom exhaust done. but oh well. Tegsox, if he doesnt have money then he shouldnt be modding it anyway IMO. and 138K+ miles is a a good bit of miles to be starting mods on, also IMO. an engine rebuild costs around $500 for parts and labor if you pull and put back in the engine yourself. but since your new and probably dont know how to do that it will be around $1100 for the rebuild. since you dont have that money dont even bother(but just in case you ever do have that kind of $$ it would be a good idea for the future). if you dont have a job, you cant mod a car since you have no $$ flow. so firstly you should search the internet about your car and learn about it and about modifying it before you start so you know what you want to do(tegsox has a huge point with knowing what you want out of your car before modding it). www.honda-tech.com, www honda-acura.net, this website, www.teamintegra.com(though not friendly people) are all good places to start on reading up on your car. and I recommend valvoline max life 10w30 oil for that many miles.

your engine.........

1996 acura integra GSR:
engine code: B18C1
inline-four
aluminum block and head
16 valve
DOHC VTEC
1.8Liter
displacement:1797cc
factory rated horsepower flywheel: 170hp@7600RPM
factory rated torque at flywheel: 128lb-ft@6200RPM
compression ratio: 10.0:1

PRO's IMO:good intake flow from factory
decent low-end torque
great top end HP
ability to rev high
extremly good aftermarket support(you can find alot of parts for reasonable prices)
VTEC
CON's IMO: your personal engine has alot of miles on it
poor exhaust flow from factory
intake manifold bolt pattern differant from all other B-series VTEC engines

so all in all you have a great platform to start with except for miles. but thats just something you will have to deal with. just keep up your basic maintenance and you'll be ok. now go search the net for some more info on your car and decide on what you want to do to it. then save some money.
