Help! Sputtering problem at high rpm!

OK....my 90 ls b18 has a minor issue. I will be driving along and if i hit the gas and make it go into high rpm or in passing gear(its auto ha ha i know), it will start to sputter.....its not too bad but i feel its getting worse. I have yet to change the plugs and wires, should i change those first and go from there? Distributor? Any other ideas? To my knowledge the plugs and wires have not been changed(how long idk). Also should i run high octane gas in there? Maybe platinum plugs? I have taken off the throttle body and cleaned the FITV valve yet.....could that cause it too?

to be honest, i had this problem in my older car...

if it starts to act like you are going as fast as u can in that gear and not letting you shift... its the trans. it makes perfect sense since you have an auto.

my second assumption would be the ECU...

But when it happend to me, my trans was slowly dying off, and it did get worse progressively as you said.

Hmmm im not having any problem shifting really........just when i give it the gas to get it to passing gear, and its running high rpm and moving fine, not cutting off or onpy letting me go so fast os when it starts to misfire. It feels and acts like a misfire......question is from where

so as you speed up and get into the high rpms, is it causing you to stay at/sputter at that one area or are you sputtering but still speeding up?

Sputtering but still speeding up is the sputter in question. My uncle has a 97 infinity g20 and it misfored like a mad man due to a camshaft or crankshaft position sensor and one other sensor.......i know the smallest thing can cause a misfire.

Change your spark plugs, fuel filter, maybe the spark plug wires.. distributor cap and rotor.. and do an oil change.. Basically do a FULL tune-up, assuming that the car hasn't had one in quite some time.

If you keep neglecting your car for too long it will die in no time. :thumbs up

just a thought

My car (also and auto) started doing that and after replacing the cap, rotor, plugs, wires, and removing the cat-converter because i thought it could be plugged, i found out the bearings in the distributor where bad. This could be the issue! look out because the new distributor is very pricy!

Good luck man,

P.S. The easy way to tell if the bearings are going is to pull the cap and rotor off and grab the shaft and try to force it side to side in all directions. if there is any slop or movement whatsoever you are in trouble.
