Shopping for a new tranny. Input?

I have a 92 DA with a b16a swap in it. I just got approved for a $1000 loan and I'm about to buy a new tranny. I don't really know where to start. I know that the y1 with lsd has bad synchros for 2, 3, 4 and I hear that its hard to find the synchros in the states. What other trannys can I get? I've heard of an cable ls working but I also hear people bash on the shitty gear ratios of the ls. What do I do? I don't know a whole lot about transmissions so any input is appreciated. (Minus the "don't do it yourself if you don't know what you're doing, I'm getting help.)

If you have a grand to spend, why not just rebuild the Y1 with LSD you have with Synchrotech components?

I would like to rebuild it, but I don't know jack shit about rebuilding trannys and I don'w want to end up fucking it up beyond belief. Will the gsr work? I just want one that is resilient. I'm kinda hard on my teg. I plan on rebuilding the old one as a learning project once I get the new one in.

Why would you take out a loan you will be paying interest on to do upgrades for your car?

Where is the logic in that?

Because I'm paying off the car still and fucked it up. No sense in paying for a car that doesn't run. Plus I got a really low apr, so I'm not too worried about it. I'm just trying to keep it alive lol.

Nice, that's the way to go

Its hard to find reputable transmission rebuilders in my area. I'd suggest picking up the Y80 GsR transmission. Hold up much better than the LS transmissions under spirited driving and even work better with forced induction. Otherwise if you can come up with another 2 to 3 hundred on top of that go all out and get the JDM ITR S80 stamped with LSD. Golden.

S80/Y80 (Optional LSD)

The transmission found in JDM GSR's is very popular and overall an excellent transmission. For all motor and boost applicatiosn this transmission has excellent gearing and a stronger differential compared to its B16A and B18B counterparts. The transmissions with LSD should have "LSD" stamped on the casing and to make sure, inspect the differential and use the parameters I described before to identify whether or not the transmission really has LSD. Look to pay between 700-1200 for this transmission depending on whether its LSD equipped. Also worth mentioning, these transmissions are all hydraulic.

Here is a look at the specs:

1st: 3.230
2nd: 1.900
3rd: 1.360
4th: 1.034
5th: 0.787
Reverse: 3.000
Final Drive: 4.400

S80 (Helical LSD)

JDM Type R transmissions are the best for all motor applications where acceleration is emphasized most. All 98 and up JDM Type R transmissions came with 4.785 final drive with the same 1st, 2nd, 3rd gears as the USDM Type R. To make highway driving more tolerable, the 4th and 5th gears are the same as GSR transmissions. Look to spend between 1400-1600 for these transmissions because of their final drive and rarity.

Here is a look at the specs:

1st: 3.230
2nd: 2.105
3rd: 1.458
4th: 1.034
5th: 0.787
Reverse: 3.000
Final Drive: 4.785

Alvi, if he does as you suggest, he'll also have to buy a cable to hydro conversion kit. So his best option quality for price is to rebuild the Y1, that is already LSD, with quality components.

I like the idea of the gsr tranny. What would it take to switch from cable to hydro? And my original plan was to do the ls 5th but idk. I'm thinking about just rebuilding it after all. I've been reading up on tranny rebuilds and it doesn't sound too hard, I just don't have any hands on experience. Only one way to learn though lol.

If you have a set of snap ring pliers, sockets, a bearing puller and some screwdrivers you can pretty much do the basic rebuild.

I paid like $240 or something for a rebuild kit off eBay for my LS transmission. New bearings, seals and synchros. No issues since. Boosted with 6k on the transmission, it's holding up juuuuust fine. Transmission shops around here were quoting me $1000+ for a rebuild, and they were telling me that it would be better to just buy a new transmission. (However I could not find anyone to sell me one!)

Synchrotech sells carbon fiber synchros, for like $300. As well as limited slip differentials for another $600-700. If you want to drop a grand on shiny new parts, you can do that then put them in yourself with the help of a factory service manual.
(Unless you're running something more then stock, I wouldn't be too concerned with a limited slip or the CF synchros.)

I have to admit though, i've been kicking myself in the ass for not installing a limited slip when I had the damn thing apart.
