Look What I Found

I opened my valve cover to change the gasket and o-rings and look what I found...a broken rocker arm. Guess thats the source of my poor idling, backfiring, shut off when I come to a stop etc.

Sir, I believe you're missing something. Not exactly sure if it's important, but looks like you're missing a rocker arm, just redline it a few times, it'll reappear.

Jk, that's weird, I've never seen that happen before

its a good thing you didnt blow the welds off of the intake, starting the engine up with that broken like that

Well my s***ty internet connection isn't loading the pictures very well.

It looks like the rocker just popped out- did it actually break or did it just come out? If it just fell out, chances are you should just be able to pop it back in. If it's loose enough to fall out you might be lucky enough to reinstall it without removing the cam, if not grab a torque wrench that can torque to 7ft/lbs or 88inch/lbs and remove the cam, reinstall the rocker and torque everything together again.

The piece that snaps on top of the valve spring broke off and thats why if fell off. It does look as if it could be snapped back in though. However im not experience in valve/rocker arm maintenance

Yes, they are all universal.

This is a downside for non-vtec engines. The rocker assemblies are not very sturdy and can pop out under high stress or when the clearances are not adjusted properly. The VTEC engines have a much beefier assembly and this does not happen with them. Its one of the pluses to a VTEC cylinder head.

Edit: it does look like one of the ends that straddles the valve broke off.

You should just swap over to a vtec motor so this doesn't happen again, it's like insurance for your valvetrain

so i think i figured out how the first rocker arm broke. it was from over tightening because i did the same thing to another one trying to get the gap up the spec.
