Wow, this project is going to be...costly.

Well, I started the whole process by driving the car home from the seller and taking the new (to me) 93 integra to my favorite shop to get an assessment of what will have to get fixed to get it street legal and.....

this is gonna be one heck of a project considering I've got 28 days to get it thru inspection before my temporary tags expire. Looks like I'll have to sell some stuff to get this one off the ground.

What do you all think? Were your projects this rough when you started out? Any opinions on the video? the car has 206k...
I only paid 1000 for the car but it looks like I'll have to add in another 1500 just to get it up to code to pass inspection.
:x

Don't get me wrong, I'm not crying the blues or anything, this was supposed to just be a commuter car to get me from work to home...but then I found this board...and now I want to hook it up...you know...

Welcome, what all does it need?

Where are you located.. Around here cars that age don't need to pass inspections.

I'm in western Maryland. It's a 93, I thought that had to go through the inspection process?
The limit on historic vehicles is 20 years i thought...

The shop claim it needs the following:
  • power steering pump
  • correct battery plus hold down
  • new clutch
  • exhaust broken after the cat (fixed)
  • Stock radiator and cooling fan (fixed)
  • Coolant hoses replaced (fixed)
  • Passenger window switch (fixed)
  • AC compressor and lines plus freon
That's the list of things the mechanic mentioned needed fixing to pass inspection.

Can't watch the video's on this computer but think of it this way.

My '93 Integra was $300, blown motor, a third gear grind, front end was totaled, and here I am thousands of dollars later with a rebuilt motor, transmission, new clutch and a turbo.

It sure was a learning experience. ;)

I highly doubt you need to have air conditioning to pass inspection, lmao. Maybe they're fucking with you to get some cash out of you?

I wouldn't know first hand- I have no emissions testing or anything in my county, but A/C? Really? Power-steering is still kind of a "maybe" in my book, because it really has nothing to do with anything other then driver comfort.

WOW!

The whole reason I bought the car was because the engine and transmission/clutch appeared strong and error free. Of course, in the future another engine will be in the works (one with less miles) but I don't expect that to happen for at least a year. (gotta save up or use tax money)

When you got your car, you knew the motor was blown? Did the seller tell you that it was blown?
Sounds like you had a REAL project on your hands. I guess mine isn't that bad considering that it's driveable and only needs a few things (compared to how yours started)

Thanks for the encouragement!

:)

PA it's 15, MD is 20, but here's the thing, power steering and ac are not required equipement, you may want them, but in theory they are NOT a part of inspection and you shouldn't need them to pass. As long as clutch still grabs some you'll pass too, might wanna ask another shop about there inspection process.

Yes, I knew the motor wasn't running. I was not aware of the extent of the damage though. After replacing it I found it was probably a very simple fix, but I put together a new motor so that should make me much happier lol

I've never had inspections, what's that all about? I run emissions to make sure I'm not polluting too much, but they don't check anything but my catalytic converter and other normal emissions items

WOOHOO!!!
I'm gonna pass!!
Well, the shop said the clutch is weak. I don't believe it because the thing grabs great in all gears and doesn't slip, shudder or chatter (when I shift right...kinda rusty with the 5-spd skills).

i'm going to go to the most reputable inspection shop in md up in parkville. They only do inspections there so they're not going to try and sell me work I don't need on the car to pass.

here in Maryland, every time a car is purchased it has to be state inspected (not really state regulated, but state commissioned....go figure)

Many places use this as a time to rack up on getting over on people by overly estimating the cost and necessity of the repairs to the car for it to pass inspection and get it's tags.

count your blessings that you don't have that racket in your state.

Hello again,

I'd like to know if the half-size radiator that is used for racing is ok for street usage? The integra I just bought has one in it, but I had to remove it to pass inspection. Would the stock/oem radiator and fan be better for daily driving?

Thanks,

Jesus, it took me a while till I realized your cat was off lol.

With my car personally, I question all the rubber pieces on it.

First the timing belt snaps.. Then I have a blowout (from toe wear).. Then a smaller coolant hose got a crack in it. Just the little things. Best of luck to you

Glad your passing, hit me up if you ever make it up towards towson/hunt valley. That's where I usually am. You could run a half size okay, many use that with a turbo setup, but as long as it's not overheating you're fine.
