Whats the low down on racing harnesses?

I recently installed a momo wheel so i lost my air bag. Is a racing seatbelt harness worth it? How and what do you need to install?

You need some real harnesses, not any ebay shit... and a Harness Bar, bolting harnesses into where your stock seatbelts in the back seat bolt in is a death wish. Find a pair of certified harnesses, and a Harness bar/roll cage if you are a baller. Or just rock your stock seat-belts...

I was thinking about removing my backseats and adding sparco harnesses and a harness bar. Would i need a roll cage as well? more for looks and safety. im not a racer. Are harnesses street legal?

DB ftw!
If you get a harness bar you won't need a rollcage and you can keep your backseats, although I wouldn't recommend having people in the back. The bar mounts behind the seat and goes across connecting the two pillars (I forgot what their called)

Just anchor the harnesses to the back seats instead of spending $430 on a bar (Sparcos atleast)

And for being street legal, I'm not sure but I'd imagine if they were installed properly no one would care, here in my town cops don't care too much.
But I think they say only intended for offroad use.

Do NOT anchor it to the back seat. You could be seriously injured in the invent of a wreck. This is NOT how they are supposed to be set up.

To the OP:
Don't bother with a harness unless you need it. If you absolutely MUST have it, get a harness bar.

haha i asked a cop about this, he told me i would have to get it checked out by a chp officer to make sure everything was installed properly but after that it was perfectly legal to use

oh yeah this is in cali tho idk if its different in other states.

In VA, I've been told that internal roll cages are illegal and 5 point harness do not suffice as a legal seat belt ie if you stock seat belts are gone it is illegal and if a cop pulls you over and you are only wearing your 5 pt then that is the same as not wearing a seat belt in legality. I am no cop or lawyer so this is all hear-say

I believe harness's have to be certified to be legal. Some brands are, some aren't. eBay brands are among those that aren't if I recall lol. Sparco your good, but like I said.. no reason to, don't worry about it.

Edit:
Nathan, i'm not saying that's not true.. but wouldn't it make sense that a five point harness would be safer if installed properly? Lol.

your information on this?

The 3pt seat belt, and reclinable seat work in a system.
Adding a harness destroys the system, you NEED a roll bar with the harness as well as a racing bucket seat.

Thats what I said, but you have to remember this is VA..... We still arent allowed to have radar detectors or sorority houses lol

Whoa. Sounds like a bunch of work and money for something I wanted for looks, and to provide more saftey because of an aftermarket wheel is installed. Is it even that much safer that regular 3pt. Seatbelts?

They are safer when paired with a bucket seat and a roll bar. Why do you think the FIA approves them for racing use? They however are RACING parts and should be kept off of a street car unless its equiped with the supporting modifications.

Are radar detectors legal anywhere? I know they aren't here.. or at least they're frowned upon. I'd just rip mine off the windshield whenever a cop was going to come near it lol.
