here are the basics 99 GSR motor with a little over 100k miles. -Skunk 2 stage 1 cams. -garret t3/t4 turbo no shaft play, tial wastegate, fmu, its currently on 6 pounds boost but can go alot more also comes with 550cc injectors and boost controller not installed..-Type r flywheel.-Exeddy clutch and pressure plate. -AEM fpr. -Brand new gaskets and seals. -Type R intake manifold. -255 Walbro fuel pump. -OBD 2 to OBD 1 jumper harness with chipped P28 ECU

the only smog and carb legal turbo kit i know is from GReddy. carb plate and everything :D
and just in case you get all bent out of shape and didnt ask about smog, a daily driver is something you could DRIVE DAILY AND NOT HAVE TO CHANGE ANYTHING TO PASS ANY INSPECTION. hence, DAILY driver. as in, every day car.

first off you said you can run "way more" than 6 psi of boost

from reading this, seems like your internals in the motor are bone stock. If you run to much more than 6psi on a bone stock gs-r, thats just dumb IMO

second, running any boost on a FMU is even dumber, dont expect your motor to last at all if you daily drive this. Get a legit tune !

third, a boosted car is perfectly reliable but it all depends on how you drive it, what kind of tune is on it, etc.

you need a greddy turbo kit to DD it. Anything else will get your car sent to ref, and yes once you have a ref ticket its ILLEGAL to drive it until its reffed. Also your smog hookups wont help you at ref.

Thats the question you asked in the OP, in CA, you can only daily drive a Greddy turbo kit. So any other set up is illegal and for off road use only. However, if you want to deal with ref tickets you can use your set up and its fine. I would use a TMIC and an internal wastegate and blow off valve to keep attention away from you.

i painted my fmic black so even the trained eyes wont spot it
