Glad to hear you're not street racing anymore.
It depends on what you truly want to do. You should try a track day and see how you like it. Track tires do cost a bit of money, but you don't need to (and shouldn't) start out on them. Try starting on a UHP class tire; I suggest a set of Yokohama S.Drives. They'll help you learn while still being forgiving and they won't mask your problems. And get some decent brakes.
If you're interested in drag racing more, then pursue that. And a properly tuned/built motor can be very reliable.
