Transmission trouble.

Hello, i just joined here. I just bought me a 90 GS DB1 automatic with a B18 a couple weeks ago. Great car but now my transmission wont shift into 3rd gear when its cold but when it warms up, it shifts fine. Someone recommended Lucas Oil for transmissions and put some in and no change. I was wondering if anyone might have a clue as to what is going on/what to do. Since i bought it i had to replace many of the ground wires, the alternator and an arc from the positive cable which kept blowing my battery fuse. immediately after fixing that, the trans started messing up on me. I really like the car and I hope no one is gonna tell me i need a new transmission! HELP! Thanks in advance!

Check your haynes manual are go buy one either way i think there is a sensor that is gone or a solenoid that has that is in the tranny.

I was thinking it was possibly the solenoids. i do plan on getting a manual soon. Thank you

Also, i forgot to mention that when the alternator was being replaced (which required moving the drive shaft) he pulled the shaft out of the socket and leaked out all or at least a lot of the fluid, though he did refill the fluid. it was after that when i noticed.

Have you replaced the filter and fluid in it yet

not the filter, but lost a lot of the fluid when the drive axle was pulled, not sure if it was all the fluid but at least most of it and he re-topped off the fluid.

may wanna check for yourself to see if he refilled it all the way or not. could be the problem as fluid expands when it heats up, hence why your having the problem only when its cold

The fluid level seems fine, however my car didnt come with the owners manual. you are supposed to check it in park with the engine running right?

it doesnt matter if the engines on or off, just make sure its on a level surface and at normally operating temp. (you can tell when the fan kicks on when engine is running) and make sure its in park.

Thanks, i will try checking the fluid again tomorrow.

Cold shift issues are usually modulator related. Try this.
Hi Everyone,
My obsessive compulsive nature won't let me stop working on this car. I'm sick. Anyway, I wanted to share something I have learned that might be helpful.
Ever since I got this car, it never really shifted right (auto). Because I have been working on so many different things, I never got around to it, but this weekend I finally took the modulator valve off the transmission, just to take a look. I discovered that the piston inside was pretty well jammed up inside and not responding to the vacuum signal. I took the vacuum diaphragm off the lower piston valving assembly by removing the four philips screws. I used a vise to hold the modulator and carefully, without stripping the heads, got them loose. After getting that off, I was able to get the piston out by carefully prying it up with a mini screwdriver in two steps, first from the lower chamber of the housing, then up in the higher hydraulic chamber, I could push it a little higher. Then I had to bang it on the workbench to get it to fall out. Once everything was apart, I wet sanded with 2200 paper soaked in transmission fluid both the piston, and the bore. Roll the paper up and push it in the bore to sand. Once I got done polishing it, the piston popped up and down freely on it's spring, which you will see come out with the piston. It sits in the bottom. Put the vacuum actuator back on, put the car back together, shifts like a champ! If anyone wants clarification. let me know

who ever said it doesnt matter if the engine running or not to check the fluid on a auto trans honda shouldnt be near a car ive been working for honda for a long time and you always check them with engine off. the only honda that you check on is the acura rdx.

Thanks, where would i find that modulator valve and how easy is it to pull of the transmission? that might be something i would like to take a look at. now my car wont shift in to 3rd gear at all anymore regardless of how warm the tranny is so it is now undriveable. i hope i can get this bloody issue resolved.

1990 integra ls automatic. few problems need some assistance please. only sumtimes when i start it it runs rough the engine shakes and it almost dies. i turn it off then start it again and it runs rough for about 5- 10 seconds then idles ok. it happend after i was speeding around. is it the main relay? or the feul pump? i have new plugs, wires, and distributer cap already.
#2
it is verry slow in first gear no acceleration at all it seems. more gas just seems to make it slower ...kinda. it just creeps to about 15-20 mph then accelerates fast and shifts and does ok after that. it just feels like sumthing iis holding it back. could it be gunk in the modulator valve?? and also where is this modulator located?

#3 i have a check engine light that comes on and off. while driving it comes on but if i come to a stop it goes off. the guy that owned it before me said the shift lock was locked and he just broke it and because of that the check engine goes on an off. could the shift solinoid thing be the root of all my problems? please help
