high rpms at low speeds

i got a 90 integra 4 door ls wit da 5 speed manual that is weird. i notice that im only goin 45 miles per hour and i am at aroung 2800 rpm in FOURTH GEAR. it is usually doing 70 at around 3200 rpm in fifth gear is that normal? because my dads van is only at around 2300 rpm doing 70 mph. please help

if he has a bigger engine it would require less work for the speed. i dont think thats very off from mine but i dont keep tabs. the 70 in 5th sounds about right with the 3k rpms...i run about 4k around 80, thats typically what i cruise at. lol.

go ahead and wait on the older guys to chime in though.

Transmission controls the rpm/gear.

2800 is high rpms? I usually shift around 3500...
That mark sounds about right. I guess I will actually pay attention when I go to work tomorrow.

in my corolla (ik different but w/e) its at 3k in fifth at 60 mph... 3200 at 70 isnt bad...

Thats normal. Be happy though at 70 mph im at 4k with my itr trans and a 4.40 final drive

Things that will affect rpm vs vehicle speed are tire size, final gear drive, and trans gearing.

I knew it controlled gear but my statement still makes since right? like if his engine is more powerful then its not gonna need as much to hit/stay at a speed so it would have less rpms right? :what:

No engine hp and tq have nothing to do with rpm vs speed.

Yep thats why with my ITR I got a LS Trans. Im doing alot of driving this summer all around ohio.

ITR w/ LS Trans at 70 im at 3200 i believe. Its been a great gas saver to. My itr trans because of the rpm i would be at i was seeing around 250-275 avg per fill up generally 9-10 gallons. Now im getting about 350 or so.

thats why you do the itr tranny with an LS final drive or something. where you swap out the 5th gear of an LS into the itr tranny so you keep the acceleration and save gas in the top end :D

Yea i tossed that idea around but Imma build the ITR trans with a high FD and keep the ls. And I have my Legacy that will be my daily when i get off my ass and finish rebuilding the engine. Its just to hot out .
