240w each speaker or 240w combined?

So I bought the Alpine Type-S Component speakers from Best Buy.
It says "Handles up to 240W peak power (80W RMS)", does that mean 240w peak each speaker or 240w peak for both speakers combined?

I'm trying to buy an amp for it, so should I buy an amp for RMS or somewhere between RMS and peak power? Like an 80w amp or a 240w amp to power it, or can I go with a 200w amp? The speakers are 4 Ohms, so does the amp have to be 4 Ohms or does it not matter?

Link to speakers on best buy.

Focus on the RMS. You want your amp to be able to match your speakers RMS.
But then I wouldn't be getting the goods would I?
Wouldn't I get more if I went between RMS and Peak, or around Peak?

the rms means thats where your speakers could handle at a constant rate. itll rarely meet max.

ex

speaker: 1000 watts max at 500 rms
amp: 800 watts max at 450 rms

i think its for the pair.
yeah its 240 for the whole thing
No, it is actually 240w rms peak EACH. 80 rms. RMS stands for Route Mean Square, or in other words, the recommended wattage (from the factory) you should supply each speaker for it to perform at its best efficiency.

OP, You can put UP TO 240w, but they don't suggest you put any more.. 240w per speak would be ridiculous and unnecessary.. 80w a speaker is plenty, but you're welcome to put more than that (say, 100, 150 even) and it should be plenty loud for you. If you have a serious sub setup, its basically necessary to amp your internals

I never knew amps had a max/peak? So you're saying I should put the amps around RMS?

Ohh, I actually wanted to get an amp just because someone on the forum said if a speaker is over 150(?)watts, it should have an amp or else it'd sound like crap and honestly I think the speakers I have could do better than how they are without an amp.
I don't think I'll have a serious setup, just trying to get some quality out of the music unless Alpine speakers are in the top 10 or something. Planning on just getting a 12" Sony Xplod subwoofer and a 1000w amp for the bass.

Oh man, have you ever heard a properly amplified system before? its leaps and bounds better sounding (SQ) and significantly louder than speakers run straight from a HU. power is very key

As far as the over 150w thing, I have no idea what he was talking about, but they'd work just fine straight off your 18w per channel interal amp in the HU...

I'm a noob to this.. what's an HU?
Yeah of course they'd work, although I just want some more quality and loudness to it.

HU = Head Unit. aka your radio, cd player, deck, etc

yeah they'll get loud, but only to a certain point, then they'll stop getting louder and start to distort and distortion: kills speakers.

To eliminate this, add a cheap 2 channel amp even, then you can crank it nice and loud, no distortion, no blown speakers

That's what I was planning on doing lol a 2 channel amp, probably a 200w x 2 or a 100w x 2 then?

100 x 2 @ 4 ohm is fine.. even 75 x 4 would be a great improvement.. If you love music, its a must have.
