ran into a rather unique starting issue that I've never heard of before

Installed new distributor. Started up fine and runs like a champ!

After extensive testing, the ICM AND the Coil were shot

So, instead of ordering those parts alone, and costing ridiculous cheddar, I figured, for just about the same price, I can get a whole new distributor.

New distributor installed, car runs PERFECT again!

WIN!!!

It's likely that you could have burned up the ICM and/or coil.
