HID Lights? Legal Or Pull Me Over Now?

Well a friend of mine gave me a set of HID head lamp kits for my car. The light kit is the kind that replaces the stock bulbs with a Xenon arch lamp, ballast and ignitor. The color is 6000k white/blue. The kit was a Xmas present and was purchased from carhidkits site, so I do not want to offend my friend by never trying them, but at the same time I do not want to blind others on the road or get a FAT TICKET. What are the penalties if it is not legal? Heck, what is the legality of these light kits? I live in CA if that has any bearing.

Technically it is illegal to put HID's into lights designed for halogen bulbs, but I've never heard of anyone getting harassed for it.

actually you are correct. just did some research and apparently its not 100% legal until you do a retrofit with a projector from a HID equiped car. But, no one gets harassed about it here

if you get pullwed over for it, you can legally shove one of the bulbs up the cops ass

they know what they are talking about! I've heard only once or twice ocassions that cop pulled somone over because of the aftermarket HIDs but there're a lot of cars out there using aftermarket HIDs nowaday so chances are very slim to none

its not that they are too high and bright its if they "splash" i think is the term. if you dont have a projector the light scatters and gets into other motorists eyes and can potentially blind them. And to make sure they are the right height you can always do a readjustment to DOT specifications or close enough to them

As long as the HIDs aren't any other color besides blue and white. My buddy has violet HIDs in his 350z and got pulled over for it cus of the color. That was in Houston. I have blue/white HIDs in my teg and no one bothers me, just those pussy's driving past me that flash their lights at me telling me to turn them off cus its blinding them. I just laugh :-D

i think anywhere from 4300k to 10k you are fine anything over is pushing it

I have seen a red 350Z in Houston with HID's that are extremely reddish/purple. I'd pull him over for it too. They look like 30K's or something obscene like that.

You would think so, not the case down here south of ST. Louis, they have nothing better to do than pull you over for the dumbest shit.
