Car starts some of the time, not all of the time

I wish that I knew about this website sooner! Wonderful information!

I have a 1990 Acura Integra LS Coupe. I've owned it since 1994 and have never really had any trouble with it--I've simply replaced parts that died along the way. Now, I cannot figure out what needs to be replaced?

My car will not always start when I turn the key. Sometimes it starts, sometimes it doesn't--it's totally random. It makes a noise like it's trying to start, but it just loops over without always starting. Two weeks ago, I replaced the fuel injectors, fuel pump and spark plugs/wires. Before making the changes, I couldn't drive it at all--it just wouldn't start. I could turn the key all day and get nothing. Since I replaced these parts, it starts most of the time, but not all of the time. For most of this week, the car required me to turn the key anywhere from 1 to 20 times before it would start. I can hear the engine trying, but the car just won't completely start. My mechanic said that I had water in the gas tank, and then he added dry gas and told me to drive it as much as possible to see if that helped. It's still doing the same thing. Ironically, the car runs really well whenever I finally get it started. I have taken two 80 mile round-trips this week and the car ran fine. But each time I had to turn off the car and restart it, I had to turn the key multiple times before it would start!

This morning, I turned the key once and the car started strong. Thirty minutes later, it took about 6 turns to start. An hour after that it took about 10 turns to start. An hour after that and it wouldn't start at all. Fortunately, I'm at home now. I'll see if it starts in an hour? I cannot ever predict when it'll start? It seems to start best first thing in the morning. I have no idea what is causing this problem? It makes a sound like it's about to start, but it just doesn't.

I had the main relay replaced a few summers ago. I never replaced the starter. Could it be the starter?

Thanks for any help on this. I'm puzzled.

thats right.
check the following

Starter
Alternator
battery
Main fuel relay
change the fuel filter

also check your grounds
^^^
X2
Also check the intake system. u may also need new spark plugs or oil, and check the engine fuel and ignition management system, because it sounds to me like its having trouble starting when the engine is hot

Keep on Truckin
could possibly be the fuel pump... maybe its having a hard time delivering fuel before the car is running.

As stated above, check out the starter, battery, alternator, etc. My money is on the main relay though, I'm willing to bet that's the problem. I see this on a lot of early 90's Honda/Acuras at work.

Tries to start, but doesn't

It turns on and makes the sound like it's going to start, but it just fails.

It turns over (and makes the same noise that it does when you start a car), but it just keeps turning over without the car actually starting. It's so random, sometimes the car starts and sometimes it doesn't.

Thanks to everyone for your comments. I haven't figured out how to reply to your individual posts--my replies keep landing at the bottom of the thread.

SpooledupRacing: I never replaced the starter in this car--maybe that's it. It's as old as the car. I also got a weird alternator reading a few months ago--faulty diode. I didn't think much of it because everything continued to work, and because the alternator was replaced about three years ago.

Rocadilla: I just put in the following new parts: spark plugs, fuel injectors, EGR valve, fuel pump, fuel filter. The mechanic who did the EGR valve was not an Acura technician and was a little confused when connecting the air suction hoses. Could a wrong connection make it act like this?

Red98teg: I just replaced the fuel pump two weeks ago.

BrokenTalon27: I replaced the Main Relay about a year ago--summer 08. Do they go that quickly?

Could be the coil in the distributor going out. My 91 was acting the same way fir about 2 months. It turned out to be a bad coil.

It started, but plumes of white smoke followed

I tried to start the car again tonight, and at first, nothing happened. Turned the key on and off about ten times. Then I waited about 30 minutes and tried again. It started right up! There were plumes of white smoke coming out of the tail-pipe, so I took it for a drive. It drove like heaven--no hesitation, good power, good speed. After driving about 4 miles, the tail-pipe stopped smoking. I brought the car home and cut it off. Then I tried to start it again, and it started right up. I don't know what is causing this car to start or not start so randomly? The little needle next to the speedometer struggles to get to a decent number when the car is turned on sometimes. It barely goes above 1 (when car won't start.). Do you think that it could still be the starter? Thanks.

Replaced Distributor Coil in '06

Thanks BrokenTalon27. I replaced the distributor coil in August 2006. How often does it need to be replaced?

Ok im reading your posts on the other threads and it sounds like i might know what it might be, when it does start and you have it running, at anytime does it run like it missfires or runs ruff espeacially when taking off. Does it ever blow white smoke on more than one occasion. And has your car ever overheat before this all started. Anything else that you can think of that feels different when the car i running will help so if you can think of any other thing you might have left out will help. one more thing check your dipstick for the oil and under the oil cap and check to see if theres any white chocolate looking residue.

thats right.
No I don't think a wrong EGR hose would make the car do what u are describing but u never know it could be something as simple as that :what: If u can, try to make sure that each hose is where it is supposed to go I'm sure there's a diagram somewhere, or take it to another technician and ask him to check

As to rpalma001 I don't think a blown headgasket would cause that problem if that's what u are talking about (none of those things happened to me when mine blew) but if not sorry lol

But yes just to make sure test your dipstick and coolent if either of them look weird it could be a bad headgasket
I hope u find out what's wrong :)
